  • 4 acres with a scag 36 WB

I know this is going to sound stupid, but how long do you guys think it would take to mow about 4 acres with a scag 36 WB? it is a belt drive and in good shape, with sulky and a 13hp motor. the area to be mowed is fairly level, I know this sound dumb but I would really like some help on this one.

if you can mow in 4th gear, I'd say about 3 hours, maybe slightly more.

Probably. You might be able to get it done around 2 1/2 hours if you don't have much trimming to do and there aren't many obstacles to mow around.

I mow (just the mowing) an acre in about 40-45 min with my 36" Husky with sulky, but there are alot of obstacles in the way that really makes me turn alot. So I would say about 2 1/2 - 3 hours (just the mowing).

After cutting 4 Acres with a wb on a velkie you proably want be able to walk. I would say it would take AT LEAST 3 hrs.

I'd be worried about killing the engine mowing that long on a regular basis... I wouldn't even take an account like that with my 44" ZTR. I have turned down a few. I think the biggest account I ever mowed was about 1.5 acre, and took about 1 1/2 hours... I was half nuts by the time it was over LOL. Then you realize you completely missed a strip 3/4 of the way across the property from where you are... Now that's where the fun starts... When someone else can hear you cursing from the street.

Propeties that big really need at least a 52" deck, 61" even beter. Just curious, are thinking on bidding on this? Are you new to the buisness or trying to get into it?

as long as your air filter is clean and your oil is in good shape, I think you should be fine. Just check it more often.

Jeff, I'm curious, how come you have turned down accounts that size? With a 44 Z time shouldn't be too bad?

As I said above... The one prop I did that was 1.5 acre had me half nuts by the time I finished it... And that was without trimming (my partner got to take the long walk around with the trimmer). After the first solid hour I just wanted off that mower so bad. If felt like it would never end. Maybe if I got used to it I could deal, but that prop I only mowed 3 times, and nothing else that big since.

I'm just too fidgety to sit for that long... You should have seen how nuts I was the times I had to drive 12 hours to Va Beach when I had to go up there for retail conferences yearly (I don't fly either)... I was talking to imaginary people inside the radio by around halfway through NC.

Well, actually I my first full mowing season was this past summer, I mowed this account every week on a 42in husky lawn tractor (hey, it works) I am looking at buying the 36 wb because I have a lot of smaller residential accounts. any way that husky takes me like almost six hours sometimes cause it is so slow, I know it is pushing it but I am not exactly what you would call rich. I own a 83 chevy van, (I think they call it a conversion van) any way, I can fit that scag walker my husky mower, (it has a 15.5 horse motor) at least 2 more 21in push mowers, both of my stihl weedeaters and my stihl blower and gas and have room to spare. so, other then not having a commercial ztr or a commercial mower with a deck bigger then 36in I am doing ok. that husky was the main mower I used last year and to be honest I have no idea how it still runs, but I got lucky last year. The scag WB will be more then enough for all my other accounts, 14 including this bigger property. So, no I am not exactly new to this biz but I am learning. that is why I asked the question cause I wanted to know. I just turned 18 in feb. and I think I am off to a good start. anyway, I will buy a bigger mower eventually (hopefully by may, I need to mow a bit to get some more money) But this walk behind is a necessity. Thanks for your help guys, and if there is anything else you guys think I should know I would appreciate it a lot. I take all the help I can get.

You'll notice a time difference in your favor switching from that 42" rider to a 36" WB (w/ sulky). I used to mow a property which was 2 acres. All I had at the time was 38" John Deere. Later in the year I switched to a 36" WB w/ sulky and I was able to mow much faster.....and the quality of cut was better as well.

6 hours on the rider? You should come in under 4 with the WB mowing in the top speed.

At this time, I believe a good point is this is the type of mowing that makes one quit the business in a short time.

In addition, I'm sure a many breaks during the cutting will be needed, for even two hours on a velky is hard on the body.

Time will also depend on the grass. If your cutting once a week you can go fast adn get the job done. If you are cutting every other week you will probably have to slow down or cut it twice.
