Is a stick edger the way to go or the bigger lawn edgers like Little Wonder? What are most of you using and what brands ?

never even touched a stick edger, always used the string trimmer with 105 line. It's a lot faster, and no need to carry around another piece of equipment

I run a stick edger, and does a real good job when cutting the initial edge, something you WON'T be doing with a string trimmer. A lot of guys maintain the edge with a string trimmer.

I don't own a big old push edger. The Stihl stick edger I use has always been enough to handle any job I needed it to.

RedMax edger here. If I get a house with huge overgrowth onto the sidewalk I'll rent a wheeled edger. Actually I rented before I bought the stick edger. Kind of like Woody says, I bet if I asked the RedMax to do what the Li'l Wonder did, it wouldn't complain. I've used it to section off turf before lifting it to expand beds, and to edge beds (the manufacturer does not support such use though).

I have a lot of time with using string trimmers and only one season working with stick edgers. In my (subjective) opinion, stick edgers out perform string trimmers regarding overall edging quality. I'm using a Stihl stick edger & have had no pblms other than an occassional clog here & there. On the other hand, I've seen pics of string trimming edging that looked great. I can't help wonder if those cuts are more the exception than the quality of trim most people get when edging with string trimmers.

I have the Echo PE3100, newer model is PE311. It's the biggest stick edger they make 30.5 cc. I usually use it once or twice a month and the other weeks I use the trimmer. Some properties though I use it each week because it's faster and looks nicer. If it wet I don't use it, use the trimmer instead.

I operate a Shindaiwa stick edger. I can't imagine ever reaching for the trimmer to cut an edge. Why would you? It takes way more time, especially because the ends of the nylon line break off with each slashing of pavement. I believe a dedicated stick edger is as essential to properly servicing a lawn as is a trimmer.

I Have A Stihl Stick Edger & Use It From Time To Time As Needed. I Use A Trimmer Majority Of The Time. Since I Didn't Plan On Using The Edger Religously I Bought The Unit That Accepts The Interchangeable Gear Boxes. Saves A Little Money That Way & Since The Power Head Isn't Being Dogged Day In And Day Out It Should Last A Good While. Just My 2 Cents.

My Shin stick edger never clogs up. My old Echo Edger... (stolen) would get clogged with dirt often.

you'll probably be fine with a stick edger. I go with Stihl because my service is (was) incredible. I'll probably move over to Redmax when my current two go under.
If you where in the South and deal with St. A. you'll quickly find out that a whip won't work as well, and if you're doing a yard that hasn't been maintained for a while that has St. A.,,, you'll wish you had a heavy duty w/b for the initial.

I use an Echo PE-200 (Home Depot model)... My ex-partner's PE-200 is still going after 3 1/2 years of use, so I got one after he left... I'd rather have the Stihl, but I had so much crap to buy after the partnership split that a nice edger will have to wait.

I can give you two good reasons why not to use a trimmer as an edger... One: my tooth... Two: my ex-partner's nose.... I caught a rock while trying to edge with the trimmer, and put a nice hole in one of my front teeth that cost me $275 to get filled... My partner did the same at another job except the rock caught him in the nose I'm sure he got a fracture, but never went to the Dr for it.

Now... That being said... I do use the trimmer to edge some small walks and back steps and such where it would be a waste to drag the edger to, and also use the trimmer for places where there isn't an actual curb to run the edger along... When I have asphalt coming all the way to the grass I find the edger actually makes more of a mess because there isn't a straight edge to guide it.

                        coulter edge

I posted this in another forum and no response, so I will try it here. Has anyone tried or know anything about a coulter blade edge attachment for a walker mower. I have a property with over a mile and a half of curb edging not counting the shrub beds and all of the other trimming. Just curious has anyone had a experience or know anything about these attachments.
