I need to buy a ztr to mow approximatley 2 acres of mostly flat grass. I'm willing to spend a little more for a machine that will last until my son gets old enough to earn his keep (he is only eight months old). I have many local dealers including exmark, toro, hustler, grasshopper, bobcat, cub cadet, JD. The Toro dealer tells me that Toro bought out Exmark and the Toro is basically the same machine just better. He also sells the Exmark. The prices all seem to be around $5500 to $6000. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

JD 717A is a terrific buy at $6300. IMHO they have the best deck design of all.

Scag, hands down. Anyone that tells you different, has never owned one.

Try them both-Scag is terrific, no doubt at all, but JD is very good at that price range.

Used JD lx277 lawn tractor 6 years, Only problem was one idler bearing fixed under warrenty, Original battery still good. Have about 250 hours on unit and am keeping it, mostly to pull small trailer and as backup. Bought new Scag Wildcat 52" with 26 hp LC Kawasaki engine. Wanted a zt to cut mowing time and eliminate stiff back, neck after mowing with conventional type unit, ie turning steering wheel constantly. The zt achieved both goals cut my mowing time from two hours to almost half that , no more aches and the seat is incredible, almost like setting in a eazy chair. Did not go with a JD because my former dealer, who sold me the JD lawn tractor either gave up or lost dealership when they changed owners. Nearest JD dealer is now over 30 miles away, leaving me with choice of Scag or Toro in better machines and the Scag looks to me to be the best of the two commercial grades available locally. I would rather buy one good machine and take care of it for many years than purchase a throw away type unit from Wal Mart, Home Depot, ect. and prefer a dealer who can service unit.
