  • Ford 5.4 liter F250.....

Guys, I know little bout Fords, but I'm interested in purchasing a used 2000 F250 with the 5.4 liter engine, auto tranny. Truck has bout 110k miles (not necessarily a turn on for me) and has an aluminum dump bed. I'd prefer 4 wheel drive, but this truck is 2wd. Priced at about $11k. It seems like it'd be a good truck to have around, probably better adapted to mowing and light landscaping. Knowing me, if/when the truck where to finally crap out, I'd remove and save the bed for a different truck anyhow.

    Questions.......

How do these engines hold up?? I remember a F350 my former employer had with a 5.4 liter, and it had idle problems that couldn't ever get fixed...

Overall durability of the truck itself?

    Is the price right?

Normal maintenance/repairs that are certain to arise with these particular trucks? (IE: like expect tranny to need replacing at 1xxk miles.)

They dont and at 110,000 miles the cylinder walls have so much play from lack of nickel in the bore the pistons are ready to swap holes , blowby is probably excessive, and this usually leads to oil leaking from everywhere on the block on to the customers nice clean driveway.....

The 1 described by you sounds like it had a vacume gasket leak somwhere in the intake track of the described engine but heads on these are junk so the entire engine is a gamble in my book!!!!!!

    I would walk away!!!!!

Did i mention any heavy use and the cylinder head gasket go`s by-by , or the head has a "mystery problem"?????

Ahh no not if the engines about to go!!!!

I have no problem with the chassis but i prefer the ride of other makes..... Some think their great so the engine is my main problem.....

I would pass on the history of that engine alone and go with something that's unrelated to that 4600 on steroids overhead cam jello motor with 4 cylinder timing belt....

    JMO..........

Ohhhhhh check below for other problems:

    Lemonade anyone?????

I can't think of why in the world Ford would put that little engine in a 1 ton...you sure on that?

Never mind. I found it. Still seems stupid...

I have the 5.4 in my F-150 and it is great. I'd go diesel if I bought a F-250 or bigger.
Given that the ‘F’ series is the biggest seller in the US there will always be some lemons out there. I have heard that when the engine was redesigned from the 5.2 to the 5.4 Ford standardized in the power plants and the new gas V-8s do not have the same life expectancy as the old ones.
$11K sounds high for that truck to me.

I have it in my f-350 pickup (2004), good so far. ....26,000 miles. i use synthetic for my oil though. Tranny, if taken care of, one would think you should be able to run up decent miles without issues.

Or they never worked for me anyway in the commercial equiptment discussions area......

I remember because a lot of people ask how do you put this part back with that part , or is there a photo somewhere showing how the linkage hooks up on so and so ,and when i posted the picture trying to help all that shows is the link......

I guess that's why there's that Mechanical question and answering area where you can post pictures!!!!!

G.M`s got it disabled here possibly unintentionally or perhaps intentionally.....

And i wouldn't dare tell you something that will piss you off at me anyway...

You also have to remember MM needs an extra durable power plant that doesnt need regular maintenance and is built like a Sherman tank.....

Most youngins / M&M types always run a couple of quarts low on oil, gallon or so low on coolant and these aren't the engines to be pushing to their maximum limits while having marginal lubrication and cooling ability....

He needs a real durable pre-2000`sh cast iron block and heads from the mid 90`s with heavy duty everything that's easy to work on and can be fixed on the road cheaply in case his women spent $500 on shoes or a manicure that day.....

A nice 95 GMC crew cab with dualies would fit him better in my opinion of coarse................

I got rid of the '94 at about 180k and I am sure it is still out there. I bet the new one won't get 200k on ity before it needs a complete overhaul.

i've got one. Decent power for mowing, but struggles w/ a few ton of materia on the trailer. Watch them COP's (coil on plugs) and the plugs. If the plugs have never been changed, run away. They are known to blow out. I wouldn't buy 2wd for a landscape truck. I've gotten stuck w/ my 4wd! Make sure the tranny has been taken care of. More than likely the passenger side manifold leaks, but that is so normal on these trucks. O and never get high pressured water in the engine compartment, messes w/ the COP's.
                        oooooooooo yyyyeah
some people pay to get a tan. I get paid to tan.

Sweet, so for $11K and free delivery?

PS: the photo option has never worked in the eqt discussions section (at least ever since I've been a member).

A few and far between around here. Do you know of any good sources near-by? I'm guessing I've have to visit Kansas City.
