  • What Mower to Purchase????

    Hello,

I work at a small Christian School in Fayetteville, North Carolina and our old mower (Gravely 300, 60") went dead on us and we need a new mower. We need to mow 8 acres once a week and 4 of those 8 acres are ball fields which during the sports seasons get mowed twice a week. We have alot of Bahia grass on our property, which is hard to mow. We have alot of open property, not alot of tight spots to maneuver around, except trees and buildings.

I wanted to know what suggestions anyone would have for a good commercial mower priced around $10,000 or below. We have been looking at the Kubuta, Deere, Snapper, and Hustler, mainly because they have dealers in the area for service. We also are considering Diesel, if that is worth the extra cost.

    Thanks in advance,

    James

I am having to put together a proposal for the two mowers that we are considering. Looks like the Kubota diesel 60" ($10,500 and zero interest finance), or the Hustler Super Z Kawaski 25 or 26 hp gas engine 60" ($7,500 with finance interest charges). A person in the church knows the Hustler dealer owner in NY.

Question is which is the better deal?

How do you compare the cost of fuel a diesel will use vs gas over lifetime of the mower?

Also what about side discharge vs rear dischage vs mulching deck?

Also, is there any concern about people under 18 operating a commercial mower in reference to insurance?

          Go with side discharge.

Thank you OLD HAT, this should help alot, we normally cut on time during the sports seasons, but sometimes fall behind off season which might rule out the mulching deck.

Why does no one ever recommend the Kubota ZD series?

              Just wondering

Kubota's are expensive. That's one reason they aren't owned by more people.

But they are very nice mowers.

I would recommend looking for some used equipment right now. The drought in many areas of the country caused a lot of new companies to drop out with some new mowers sitting in their garage.

I think any of the name brand mowers will serve you just fine.

Have you ever considered just getting a larger Kubota/Deere/Cub Cadet tractor with a 72" mower underneath? It could be used for more things than just a weekly mower.
