  • Sulky Advice

Hello I'am new to this sight and have a question about sulkys. I have a 36" wb gravely hydro. Gravely has e-mailed me two part numbers for sulkys they sell one is a single wheel the other a two wheel. So wich is better? Any help would appriciated.

It depends upon if you are a fanatic about lines. The single wheel variety puts another line between the tire marks and may not "look good". The 2 wheel variety would probably track with the tires of the mow to produce a "nice look".

With the one wheeled sulky you have all your weight plus the 15lbs or so of the sulky itself ALL on one wheel. Any moisture on the yard and I would think you would be leaving a nice rut in the yard. On the other hand, with the two wheeled, you have your weight much more distributed evenly. Just my thoughts.

        i use the single wheel.

i have two of them for my exmarks. i never have had a problem with the stripe looking bad. as far as weight distribution on wet ground, you gotta use some common sence and know your yards. the exmark velkie weighs 50lbs with a real wide slick on it. if the ground is saturated then i take it off the machine and walk the yards.

i use the single wheel on my exmark. when turning you dont swing out as wide, so it more menuverable. I dont mind the extra stripe down the middle that the wheel leaves, it kind of makes it look more like it was mowed with a push mower. As far as the weight issue, I would think you would have to worry more about ruts with the double wheel version since it tracks behind the mower tires. The mower probably weighs around 600 pounds on its own, then followed by your 200 or so pounds in the same ruts. The front wheels carry almost no load when your on a sulky so almost all the weight is on the back tires. At least with the single wheel the next 200lbs are somewhere different. Plus it just folds up if you dont need it rather than taking it off. And if you do want to take it competely off, its just 2 pins. Takes about two seconds

                      sulky advice

I went to the local exmark dealer yesterday and was talking to them about sulkys found out that some of the bigger operations in my area are using the single wheel outfit behind there exmark walkbehinds. I do realy appriciate all the input

                      Thanks

Riiiiiiiight....and I'm guessing you guys haven't ever run two wheeled ones right? Look at it this way...a walkbehind has narrower tires than a zero turn...which would leave deeper ruts in a damp lawn? Right, so, the same holds true with a one wheeled sulky vs. a two wheeled. With the wider tires on the zero turn the weight is distributed more evenly therefore evening out the weight difference of the ztr vs. the walkbehind. Likewise, say you plus the sulky are 200lbs...which is going to leave the deeper rut, the one wheel where all 200lbs is on one narrow wheel OR with the 2 wheel where each wheel is holding 100lbs?

Oh yeah, I'd love to have 3 ruts with a one wheeled vs. 2 with a 2 wheeled.

No charge for the lessons...hope it's simple enough.
