  • Commercial vs. Homeowner

This is to all you guys who are hesitant to take the plunge and purchase commercial grade equipment.

This weekend I was re-aquainted with the benefits of quality equipment.

My first 21" mower was a Snapper Commerical -- no complaints. Towards the end of my 2nd season something (don't remember what) broke and I needed a quick fix to finish out the year. I went to Home Depot and picked up a Honda Harmony II for $460. I thought since it was a more expensive HO model it would be better. I have used it as a back-up for 2 seasons. I found a matching one for $75 and bought it, but quickly ended up using it as parts for the original as they wore out. This was a nice little mower, but it just couldn't handle the full work-load.

I just returned from a weekend of scalping with my new Honda 216 Commercial and I will NEVER go back to an inferior model again. I immediately could tell the difference in quality. Everything is made of metal instead of plastic and the bars are an obvious stronger grade of metal than the Harmony.

Its worth it -- trust me! An extra $500 will be worth it in the long run when you don't have to worry about "down time." You won't regret it...

    Good luck!

Actually i never cared for the Honda throwaway GC / General consumer engine but there pretty quiet and you must have got a good one if you got 2 yrs outa it running commercially....

What about if the homeowner Honda had steel wheels and the handle off the commercial model??????

How would it size up against the 216 throwing out what others think about commercial vs homeowner and worrying about pleasing other members....

You know ....Lets forget about the political aspects of H.O vs Commercial equiptment for the post....

Specifically if you did get decent use what else can you point out that warrants the cost difference?????

I met a guy last year who was running 3 Toro's that he bought at Home depot for like 299 each...

I asked him how are they were working , and he had a nice truck trailer combo , and commercial Z so he was not not a scrub...

He actually said he preferred them to his commercial toros.....

      They were sitting home.....

We got talking about the engines and he got upset when i told him it/they had a Tecumseh powering them....

"No its made by Toro , its got a 5 yr guarantee start on the 1st pull warentee and everything , hey look says toro right on the plastic covering"....

Well i pointed out the Tecumseh emblem on the side of the block and then after gazing at the carb goes damn your right i never woulda known or believed toro used junky Tecumseh's....

Well i saw him last week and he`s still useing the homeowner toros , and is still happy with them despite always thinking tecumseh's were junk , and the commercials are still sitting home waiting for the homeowner units to break down....

Honestly i thought he was gonna be closed minded and throw them away the day i showed him they were powered by tecumseh's , but he ended up being open minded enough that as long as they work their working cheap and making him $$$$$$$....

So really if the handle and wheels were changed whats the other advantages?????

Like i said im not pushing GC powered anything, because anyone i knew that had 1 had problems but that was when they 1st came out, and did have bugs ,so i just wanna know what major differences you find between the Commercial and non commercial Honda's besides wheels and handle....

      Tanky....

Good reply. No sarcasm and off the wall reply? Whats up? Just kidding. Really though that was a good reply. The way i see equipment is that you get what you pay for, but you also have to get what you can afford and can make you the most money in return. If you can get by with a homeowner tool or piece of equipment, then you will be further ahead than spending the extra money on commercial stuff. I have a couple homeowner things that work fine for me. There are also things that I would never buy HO models.

I hate to admit it but I was going through one or two home owner Costco specials every year until I bought the HRC 216.

It paid for itself right away.

I am never using a HO model again.
