In alleys and low maintence Thick course line.

I have never tried piano wire.

I keep muliti sided .08 line and a little heavy round line on the truck. I use the heavy line for what I call grinding. I use both for cutting the grass to the ground with a string trimmer. If I have a lot of grinding I go to the heavier line.

Some line is cheaper than others and will break off and wearout faster whatever its thickness. Plastic can be brittle for many reason a couple are air and sunlight and poor manufaturing processes or design.

Weed eating is the most butchered part about proper lawn mowing. As a Fert & Squirt Guy I see scalped areas that grow weeds all day long. One contractor I network with has an employee who can't get in his thick head how to weed eat. I have tried to show him the proper way several times with no luck. He keeps insisting his way looks better. I keep telling him it won't look better next month when there is no grass in that area. When I had mowing crews we used .065 string on a .095 size weed eater.

Piano Wire is hard to find but my son plays piano and the piano tuner gave me a spool that he didn't like the sound of many years ago. It has so much spring that it is hard to bend around a weed eater spool and tie off. I use an old worn out spool and only tie it off. The wire is thin and cuts clean, in fact it cuts too good. I don't think OSHA would approve of it. It will cut just about anything in its way. It will last a long time and is best used on heavy areas. I find it handles weed eating ditches full of water very well.

piano wire is used by hillbillys to strangle and slit throats at the same time.

        Excellent response-Thanks!
I am presently using Stihl .105 cross cut and have Stihl .155 cross cut with Kevlar (equivalent-I can not remember the exact trade mark) mostly used for clearing tough nasty grass or brush.

Steve-O, Echo likes to rape you

The .095" orange chit from home depot works just as good and for a whole lot cheaper.

i recently switched to the round and it holds up just as good as the square and you can run it out a bit longer. anything over .095 with the gatorline is severe overkill. its almost indistructable. GO GATOR
