  • Honda GXV390

Anyone have any experience using a Honda GXV390 engine (13HP vertical)?

If so, please provide a brief review of your experience.

    Power?
    Torque?
    Performance?
    Reliability?
    Ease of maintenance?
    Cost of ownership?
    Etc...

    Thank you. :alien:

If it's the same 13hp they use on the pressure washers, I had small issues with mine. I didn't like it very much.

I don't know if it was that one or not.

Mine just didn't run very smooth from the get go. Not the easiest thing to start either. I have a few other smaller Honda engines that are worth their weight in gold. Especially the 5hp units. They can sit 5 months and through winter, and still start up on the 2nd - 3rd pull when we get them out in the spring. Quite amazing.

I just wasn't as happy with the 13hp. I only had it for 9 months, it was stolen when the shop was broken into. I wasn't too upset losing it, especially being that my insurance company covered it. I probably won't buy another one.

Hmmm, sounds like a gamble. I know they've been around for a couple decades. I would like to think if they've been around that long they ought to be decent. The engines are just so cheap compared to others. Can be bought for under $500 even though they list at around $900. Even a 15HP Kohler runs $700+ anymore. I'd really love a Kawasaki v-twin, but waaaaay too expensive for my project. :alien::alien::alien:

i have the 24HP vertical on one of my 61" riders. Does pretty good, very quiet, good torque (unless the grass is real thick), and good on gas. Does vapor lock once in a great while.
                oooooooooo yyyyeah

                  UPDATE:

Found a new GXV390 unit for $400, $50 to ship. Best price I could get my hands on (of any decent engine to fit the mower). This engine is to power a Exmark TT 36" project mower. Don't really need the mower, just like tinkering with crap. :alien::alien::alien:

                      Yeah.

Figure the Honda will turn it into a commercial mower.

Well, good luck. I figured you were doing something like that.

I bet you will be checking the R.P.M. on it !
