  • Whats the best 30cc+ trimmer

We are looking to buy a new large cc trimmer and with the Shindiawa/Echo merger and no 2 stroke above 29cc thats out for us, so.......
Who do you think makes the best 30-40cc trimmer and why do you think so?

Stihl FS250 is a well proven one, get it fast, it is slated to be discontinued.

The Shindaiwa T3410 C4 trimmer might be a good one, their SpeedFeed head is second to none. Also Honda HHT35S. Honda is cheaper, I've seen it for $359. But Honda is cable drive and no attachment options.

Stihl 4Mix trimmers have mixed reviews, so I don't know about these.

The Shindaiwa T272 is 27.2cc but it is 1.4hp. It is bullet proof and strong. It is quite expensive though. From what I talked to people, you can even buy the muffler of the original T270 and it will fit. This is a non cat converter muffler and you get a little extra power. If you are interested, I'll try to dig up the part number.

Also The Maruyama 30.2cc 2 cycle trimmer that is 1.7hp.

Bottom line, if I am going to buy a big trimmer, FS250 and T272 would be my first choice. They are 2 of the 4 famous remainding old school trimmer on the market and they are not going to be around much longer, just matter of time they'll disappeared. The other two is Stihl FS80 and Husqvarna 326. FS80 is discontinued already, you might get lucky to find a new one in stock still.

We also tried a Stihl FS250 in 2006 and after 1 yr it needed $274 in clutch, bearings and bottom end parts. Stihl dealer said we were running too much line and not using stihl brand oil. Now in 2010 Stihl has no dealers in this 125,000 population town, go figure. They wen't out 2 weeks after we took it in for service and we got back a box of pieces. That's why we are looking again. Where do you buy Marayuma? We have a T27 Shindi but of late parts take a week to get and many are obsolete. We have a Shindi T-30 also, but it needs an unavailable ign coil, and is not balsy enough for trimming the 2 acres of 3 ft tall grass we do 2x yr and a few more like it.

I have two dealers that sell Maruyama, never even give it a second thought!!! Check Turfeagle online.

I have the Maru BL8100 bp blower, love it. Maruyama have 5 years commercial warranty.

For the kind of trimming you are doing, check out the Honda HHT35SUNBA 35cc with bike handle. I have the HHT31SUNBA 31cc, cut through 3 feet tall stuff like butter. The 35cc is even stronger. It comes with blades standard also. The regular HHT35S is the loop handle and is only $359. Get the Shindaiwa SpeedFeed head though, I don't like the Honda head. The Honda got the be the quietest and smoothest trimmer around. When I first bought my Shindaiwa M242, I actually thought something was wrong because the vibration was so strong. I actually brought it back to compare to another one before I was convinced that it was normal. The Honda is smooth like silk. It is so quiet the the spinning head is as loud as the engine if not louder.

In backpack land, We have 2 Redmax EBZ 8000 units and 2 Shindiawa 8510 models. The Redmax units may be a bit loud but the power is second to none, the Shindiawa units are quiet and smooth and the crew says that all 4 are a tie on power.
Will look into Honda trimmers though, at least the powersport dealer we do work for can get those on an order. Can't use a blade on these properties though as there is above ground wires and irrigation piping from the river also. We use .105 line which works well, but you need close to 2hp to spin that fast.

Maruyama BL8100 has same power as the Redmax EBZ8000 and Shindaiwa EB8510??!! I never expect that!!! That is good to hear.

I was thinking after I post my respond. Even 35cc might not be strong enough for you if you run without guard. I ran .105 on my Honda, but I had my guard on so the string is not that long. But as I said, power has never been a problem for me, I have been trimming 3 to 4 feet tall weeds, and the 35cc is even stronger. If the Honda is not strong enough, you might really have to look at 40+cc trimmer. I don't have any experience or knowledge to help you on that. Honda is pretty cheap for the size and very little vibration and very very quiet.

I didn't exactly help!!! But let me know what you end up buying and how do you like it.

I was actually looking in all my catalogs. There are not many 40+cc trimmer. All are bike handle other than FS250. The bigger Stihl seems to only come in saw blade, don't know whether you can put a trimmer head on. Redmax has one with trimmer head. Shindaiwa discontinued the bigger ones two years ago. Husqvarna have two. That's all I can offer.

You are about the first I ever heard that the FS250 can't keep up with you.:laughing:

I am just thinking out loud, if FS250 is not doing it for you, you really can't get much better in the hand held trimmer department. Do you think a walk behind trimmer will work for you? THose that have trimming radius of about 21", with a serious 4 cycle 100+cc engine. If you have multiple guys, one push the big guy and the other use a regular trimmer.

These are steep slopes, 74' drop over 121' from edge to river, roots, stumps, holes and wires for lighting and pipes- no wheeled trimmer will work.
We have 2 Tanaka 32cc trimmers that are good for lawn work and we currently using those with .95 line but it is slow work and I hate having to put new clutches in them, which I ordered today. Tanaka guy says they make a 40+ cc unit we will love and he will have one on hand soon and let out for a day to demo. At least Tanaka is only 8 mi and he will be around for awhile as power equipment is a small part of his business.
Thank You for the help, you didn't give us a unit or reccomendation but you tried and thats help.
