I have a 20hp Kohler engine on a walker mower. Prior to changing the oil, it smoked a little (white), but now that I changed the oil/filter, it smokes like crazy (white) and bogs out. It starts fine, will go forward and back, seems to run fine even after engaging the blades. I'll begin cutting and may make two runs when the engine just cuts out...literally stops. Disengaging the blade quickly doesn't seem to keep it from cutting out.
I'm thinking the rings are shot and the lack of compression is cutting off the engine when the load of actually cutting the grass occurrs. The engine will start right up afterwards and the hydro's work fine going forward, back, etc.. Even engaging the blade doesn't affect it until a few minutes into actually cutting grass.
Has anyone else had this occurr? If so, was it something else - maybe a faulty safety switch? Or do you all think as I'm thinking..that it's time for a ring job..perhaps a rebuild (which would you all reccomend?)
I put an oil additive into the crank case to try and remedy the excessive smoking - didn't seem to work...still smokes and still cuts out.
