  • Kohler or Kawasaki?

Getting ready to replace my hand-me-down 48" WB with a similar sized rider. I've noticed that the ones I've checked out frequently offer one of these 3 engines: 17 hp Kohler Command Pro (1-cyl), 19 hp Kawasaki (2-cyl) and a 20 hp Kohler Command Pro (2-cyl). Any thoughts/recommendations are welcome. My inclination is to go with the highest HP twin available (the twins are $250-500 more; the Kohler $0-100 more than the Kawasaki) unless I hear otherwise. This will help narrow down my choices (and make my next post). Thanx...

Both of my deeres and my one exmark have Kawisakis in them and I love them. I recently just bought a dixie chopper with a Kohler Command 27hp. It is a solid engine, but it is much more cold blooded and has a harder time running on even keel. If I hit a bump at 13mph on the dixie hard enough, i will have to slow down to let the engine even out again while I've never had this experience on any of my kawi's

Go with the kaw. Ive own a 48" belt drive with a Kaw for 8yrs, and i just change the oil, thats it. I have not one problem with it. I just bought a 52" tt hydro with a kaw........

I prefer the Kawasaki over the Kohler. I have both and both seem to be holding up okay. As said earlier here the Kohler is more cold bloded and seems to surge at times.

                  Kawasaki

                  I had a JD-188 with the 17 HP kawasaki.
It was terribly abused (by myself) but still outlasted the rest of the 188 body!
                  Kawasaki makes fine engines!
