I've noticed that John Deere hasn't been mentioned at all. I don't own any of their equipment but I'm interested if anybody has any real experience with them. I get all my irrigation supplies from John Deere Landscaping and now they're carrying their lawn maintenance equipment. I do like the idea of one stop shopping.

Scott,
Guess I'll get over the fact you are AF and answer your question. I'm USN by the way doing like you, making a little on the side.
I have 2 JD63C's, residential variety, 21" with front caster wheels and rear wheel drive. Been going strong for a year and a half with nothing but oil changes. Only complaint I have is the blades don't see to last too long.
Also have a JD Weedeater, 1 H.P. This thing will chop your leg off if your not careful. I bought it when starting out to save money on a blower (it's a quicktach). The linkage got weak after about a year so bought a blower and now it's a full time weedeater.

John Deere was my best motivator in selling me on my Scag Turf Tiger and I properly thanked my dealer for the boost up.
I had put in a request to demo their version of the Great Dane and hit a brick wall; the same wall I hit 3 years ago with the same request. The Demo guy is in Renton WA and his lame excuse was "it's not in my demo fleet"!!!!!! What?!!!!!!!!!!!
I went on line and asked for a demo and Deere's online registration said that I would hear from a rep in 10-14 days. I'm still waiting for some sort of acknowledgement and that was 2 months ago!!
I have a Deere HD45, but my only conclusion is that Deere really could care less about selling commercial lawn equipment, especially to the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas of WA State. Screw them.
The kicker is that they aren't even calling their dealer back in Silverdale who is trying to forward my complaint and thanks for selling me on my really nice Scag! The Silverdale dealer lost a potential sale to the other guy a few blocks away because the Deere Demo guy wasn't interested in making a sale.
What's wrong with this picture?

IMO-John Deere not worth the money
My experience is that JD is too expensive and not tough enough for my applications. They are too expensive because they do not make all their equipment like Kubota and most Honda products. I have never seen a JD hand held product built as tough as the equivalent Stihl product.
• I had a John Deere 30S trimmer-it blew up after less then two years. For all small engine hand held applications; blowers, chain saws, pole pruner, etc., I use Stihl exclusively.
• I had a commercial 21†JD mower with a very strong Kaw engine, but the deck blew up. I now use Honda commercial.
• I had a 318, engine blew up at 1600 hours. I have replaced the engine ($2000) and it works- O.K. I use Kubota when ever possible for larger stuff.
John Deere is just not worth my time or money.Incitatus for the US Senate !
