  • Regulator or alternator?

I have a John Deere GT275 that I bought used, and it is not charging. Anybody know how to determine if it is the regulator or alternator that needs replacing? It has the FC540V Kawasaki single 17 engine. Thanks.

i had that problem on my exmark which has a 17 hp kaw and it was something simple. there was a switch that was under the fuel filter that had come loose. this thing was hidden so i had to take it it in,but they found the problem in no time at all.

delasgh, thanks for the response, but that wasn't my problem.

The way to test is process of elimination. A really nice john deere service manager told me to unplug the stator from the wiring harness, turn my voltmeter to AC, and check voltage across the terminals with the engine at full throttle. If around 30 volts, stator is good and it is safe to assume that the regulator was faulty. Well, my stator pumped out 29.5 volts AC.........so I changed the regulator, charges my battery now. Hope this helps someone out.
