  • Honda HRR216PDA coughing at full power

Two year old 216 Harmony II has problems. Will run at full power for a minute or two then start coughing/backfiring and will eventually sputter out in 10 seconds. I can start it up again after a few pulls and it runs fine of a minute or two then starts coughing again. If I power down to a slow idle while it is coughing it runs fine at slow idle. Keeping it on idle for about 1 minute I can power up again for another minute or two until it starts coughing again. Will do this for about 30 minutes then it runs fine.

I've changed the plug, cleaned the carb, and I'm a whit's end. Any body have an ideas or suggestions?

Naw, its not the air filter. I've taken it off and run it without the airfilter. It is still coughing. While its coughing, if I give it full gas it dies, if I throttle back to slow idle it runs fine.

I had a toro 21" that did the same thing after it sat for a year and a half before it was stolen. Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Did you take the carb off and completley disassemble it? Fresh fuel in the tank? Cloggled fuel line?

Problem solved. I flushed the fuel line with gumout and it runs fine. I'm thinking it was a small blockage (varnish buildup???) at the fuel shutoff valve.
