  • Double Blades

In response to requests from my many fans I will divulge the secret of double blades.
I invented or heard about (can't remember now) this practice many years ago. Simply bolt 2 blades on each spindle in a +. There are countless variations for different situations. High-lift gator on bottom, reg gator on top turns leaves to dust when mulching. Double low-lifts (so as not to drag down the engine) destroys spring growth when discharging. The combinations are endless & finding the best one for your particular mower & cutting conditions, a challenge.

If you have new mowers this practice voids the warantees on most mowers.

If you're stupid enough to leave the doubles on when taking in the mower for warrenty work.

Spindle damage is non-existant if blades are realatively balanced. Manual clutch cannot be damaged if blades are engaged and disengaged at low RPM. Does cause slight extra wear on an electric clutch but well worth it for the increased production potential.

If they do no damage, and make for a better cut, why don't the companies start mass producing these blade set-ups and start bragging about the cut? But instead void the warranty if used?

Will I get a better cut if I use 4 blades on each spindle? It wouldn't look like a 'x', but a '*'!!!

If we have any problems with the 'doubles', can we sue the crap out of you for "inventing" them as you say you did??

        Sweet!

Shlepper, they are mass produced using a special bracket by DC, Gravely, Walker & Meg-mo. Exmark reps will also tell you in carefully worded caution that while they don't recommend doubles, their use will not void the warranty.

So, how much do you get for 'inventing' them....and can we sue you if we have problems?? Can I use 4 on each spindle, or maybe go totally nuts and slap an un enen number on there like 3, 5, or God forbid we go for 7, yes seven on each spindle! If one does good and two does great, 7 may allow us to only mow once every 2 months? I hate sharpening blades, now I will have 21 per mower? Well, I'll pass it on to my clients. Toots.

Wow I did not mean to get you two at it again.

My dealer carries Grasshopper, Husqavarna, Encore, Snapper and Toro. He told me he use to carry the brackets but he quit because of the warrantee issue. A good set of gator blades will just as good of job and they do not void your warrantee and you don't have extra blades to sharpen.

I just wanted to let people know that it could be a warrantee issue if your mowers are out of warrantee what do you have to lose, other that spindles. witch run between 100.00 to 250.00 per spindle.

I have a hard time believing that a certain person would spend extra money on blades when he won't replace worn out trimmer guards or buy hearing protection for his employees I guess it is all about priorities

If a guy was real handy he could buy one bracket, use it for a template and weld the blades together!

At 100-200 per spindle, 200.00 for a clutch. I think I'll just stick with a non-original Idea and use one blade.

I can't see a guy in a high production situation, 20.00 per lawn (any lawn) take time to sharpen an extra blade per spindle. Or is it that each blade last's twice as long because it's only cutting half the grass it used to ??

Obviously since the bottom blade makes the initial cut, it is not necessay for the top blade to be sharpened every time.
The top blade is either for dusting leaves (gator) or increasing the velosity and size of the discharge in heavy conditions.

double blades worry me because what happens if u hit something solid and something gets loose it just sounds dangerous unless your mower is made for it

                        double lawn blades...a user view

I tried double blades and was cutting high grass ( I should have taken double off!!) and I broke the drive belt, blew out the oil pan gasket on my Exmark TT HP 14 hp, I don't think I will try it again. I would think if you had an over-powered mower you could use them!

i've been using double blades lately on my 36" w/b, but i think im gonna take them off. cuts alot nicer when mulching, but more grass sticks to the bottom so i have to clean it more and lately the mower has been stalling out when i attempt to start the blades after i initially start the mower for the day. could too much weight be put on the spindles causing the engine to bog down and have trouble starting the blades? its a 13HP Kohler.
