  • Kohler won't start

    Hey all
My old mower,a craftsman with a 15.5 HP Kohler runs great when cold. But after its shut down it won't start again until it sits 20 min. or so. Checked, don't have any fire. Whats next?[?]
    Thanks for the info.

    Hello Heavenly Grounds:

I'll do a little Guessing here?

Ok, If you checked & no Fire, do this.
Run it again & when it gets Hot, then quits.
Have your tools ready, take off the Engine shroud so you can see the Coil, look for a ground wire that plugs (should be push type connector)into the side of the coil... that is the engine kill wire...

Dissconnect that ground wire & try to crank it.
If it then cranks, It is not your coil.
Then check your ground wire all the way to the other end for cracks or bare spots (grounding out).

If it still doesn't crank, do this,
(the steps below is with the ground wire still disconnected)

You are doing this as fast as possible, so the engine remains hot, Ok take off the plug wire, then remove the plug, connect plug wire back on the removed plug, ground the threaded part of plug to the engine block, then try to crank engine, if you don't see any sparks then you need a Coil...

This is all assuming that your Plug & Plug wire is in good shape visually. And your engine is one that has electronic ignition, also your ignition switch is in good shape.

      Hey GrassMaster
You'r exactly correct. Had done some research prior to reading your reply. The wire going to the male terminal connector on the coil is a ground wire. It's ran in series with the safety switches & relays, once removed you eliminate a possible switch or relay problem. If their is still no fire to the plug, the coil is bad. My coil is bad.($35.00) Thanks for the feed back.Your doing a great job with the forum!!![^]
