  • Scalping Issues

I read on a post, on needing a new mower, a comment that was made on not getting anything larger than a 36" fixed deck mower because of scalping issues. Is there a problem with fixed decks or is it the size of the mower. I would appreciate the input.

I haven't ever had a problem with either of my 48" mowers scalping. As long as the deck is set high enough and the proper settings are maintained, there should never be a problem with scapling, unless of course, its a junk mower[][:p]

I think what the person who made the post was referring to is that with a floating deck, the deck will not scalp as easily since it is just hanging by chains and can move up and down when it hits a bump. It can still scalp though. The fixed deck, although I've never had a problem with it, could scalp a little easier since the deck will not give at all when you go over a bump or higher piece of ground so to speak.
