  • new truck and advice please...

well, my partner just traded in his 02 F250 for a Mitsu-Fuso FG, four wheel drive, dump body. we've been looking at one tons and dump trailers for a while now and figured the only thing his short bed, extended cab is doing right now is towing the trailer. this will do that and a lot more. I can forsee a big timesaver by eliminating wasted trips for mulch and soil, etc. will be putting a plow on it and using it year round. I'm sure Jack will now advise us all how short-sighted we are at doing this. I've read the posts.

the second part of this post is to ask about truck/leaf loaders. I want to set this up to do leaf cleanups and would like opinions on which truck loaders are worth looking into.

Not sure how you would set up your fuso, but we set up our one ton with a truck-loader. We had a custom hitch fabricated for our trac-vac that slid in the receiver. We then made up a large box on the dump truck where the vac blew all the leaves in to. We had the hitch made up so that when the truck was full and ready to be dumped, the hitch assembly with the truck-loader would swing off to the side and lock in place, then you can go ahead and dump, then swing back into place and lock and go back to the job site. I think billy goat and giant vac also make decent truck loaders.

I love Mitsubishi Fusos. I run them. But I would not get the FG 4x4 until they put a stronger engine in it like the FE-SP has. Trust me on this. Mits makes better trucks than the FG. It's not that it is a bad truck, it's great. But I spoke with my dealer and they have no plans on updating to a more powerful engine in the near future. And with teh automatic, it won't be a good tuggin' machine. Now had you said FE-SP or the FH, I would stand up and salute you! They are GREAT trucks. No problems with any of them in 5 years! NO PROBLEMS! All we do is change the oil about every 8,000 miles.

jr, thanks for the advice on the loader. I saw that giant vac has a setup like yours on their website where it swings away from the hitch. I also think I have a billy goat dealer local.

scaper, well, too late. it's a done deal. so what's bad about the motor? we got the 5 speed, not the auto. we went with the fg not being sure how the two wheel drives would work plowing

The two wheel drives do fine plowing, I've got one with a plow, another coming.

There is nothing wrong with the engine at all, they are great. But it is a little underpowered compared to the FE-SP model. I was just thinking about the fact that you would be pulling a trailer or really loading it down.

If it makes you feel any better, I spoke directly with the District Rep about them. I mentioned that I would consider the 4x4 if they held a payload closer to what the FE-SP does (which is like 9,000 pounds). He told me that they are pretty much the same exact setup and it will hold that much. But they rate them lower because they sit up higher.

I'm glad you didn't get the automatic, after about 1000 miles, you'll realy get a good feel for that manual tranny. It should be real close to the same one on the other FE models. Great clutch and great shifting. Obviously, 1st gear is rarely, almost never used.

We've been running Fuso's for 5 years now. Never had ONE problem at all. Not one!

A standard FE-SP without the body will be around $25,000, maybe a tad less if you are lucky. Diesel of course. And 14,500 GVW with about 9,000 pounds payload. The price for the body will vary depending on if you get a dumper, or whatever. But somewhere in the range of $5000.
