Dave, I use echo HC1500. I have a wall full of them. Probally 8 pair? Theyre affordable , common and user friendly. Just a basic good gas shear. I have a few pair that are 6 yrs old probally w/ who knows how many hrs. Give those a look. If you want a cadilac shear you can find a kawasaki dealer and look at the KHD 600. These are probally my favorite pair. I like the sound the feel and the balance. But theyre pricey. As far as the extension equipment. I have never used them. Ive never had numerous tall material that required them . We always seem to get by w/ aluminum ladders or a window ledge on an apartment or what ever . If you have a long high hedge on your property they may be what you want. If your on the hunt for a nice gas shear just stick w/ what ive mentioned or a stihl product. My advice on shears is dont go to cheap. Just get the ones you like youll never regret it. As far as your mechanical problem id replace the plug, drain the gas and remix some 2 cycle. A smokeless blend of oil is nice on shears cause they spend alot of time directly under your face.
good luck ,, let me know any questions.

              Sputtering Trimmer

I think you have to weigh the opinions of the other fellas on which item to chose or see if you can test one to compare. On a mechanical note. The diaphragm in the carburetor is probably shot so a new diaphragm along with a carb cleaning should fix your erratic running problem.Much cheaper than buying a complete carb or replaceing whole unit.

Back on the topic of hedge shears, trimmers, clippers I have the hedge trimmer attachment the goes on my Still edger trimmer. Its good for tall hedges giving you plenty of reach but it's hell on the arms after an hour or two tends to be a bit on the heavy side. I don't do enough hedges to justify the extra cost of a straight hedge trimmer, so you have to weigh that up plus the little extra time to change

either you've been reading too many posh articles for the "landscaper wanna be gardener elite" or you run in circles unbeknownst to the everyday working landscaper/maintainer.

Uh Scott? You look each one of these up? I'll kinda have to agree with Mike, you do have too much time on your hands! LOL...just kidding!
