Easiest and probably the most certain why to be sure you get rid of any possible related problems (maybe not the quickest) would be to just replace the tank. Be sure you flush fuels lines and carb after replacement.

Not the quickest cause it may take time to find a tank. But remember, replacement doesn't have to be an exact match, so long as you can secure it well.

You say the tank was full. Are you certain the gas is bad? (You throw a question mark in there).

I would empty the tank for starters. You don't say if it is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. On a 4 stroke with a bowl-type carb, I would pull the bowl as well. Get every bit of the old gas out. Put it back together and add an 8 ounce container of Techron (fuel injector cleaner, you can get it at WalMart) to a quart of gas. FIll the tank. let it sit for a day or two. Agitate the tank a few times over the course of a few days. Then fire it up, let it run for 10 or 15 seconds, shut it off. Drain and dispose of the fuel.

A 2 stroke is going to be a bit more to deal with, as you need to have lubrication in the fuel, and Techron is pretty agressive stuff. I would mix the Techron with a gallon of fuel, and put in at least 50% MORE oil than called for. Other than that, same procedure. Let it sit in the tank for a few days. Shake it around if at all possible. Then run it for 10 to 15 seconds or so. Enough to be sure it has gotten into all the passages in the carburetor. Drain it, and dispose of it, then mix up new gas.

In either case, I would highly recommend adding Sta-Bil to your fresh fuel to avoid this issue in the future. And, if there is ANY type of fuel filter inline on it, replace it. Probably a good idea to replace any fuel line as well.

Oh, and when I say Techron, that is what I mean. NO SUBSTITUTES. Most fuel injector cleaner is garbage. Techron works really well.

        bad gas

if 4 stroke, empty the gas, blow out the fuel tank with an air compressor, install in-line fuel filter. if it's been sitting any amount of time you'll save yourself a lot of headache by cleaning the carb with a good carb cleaner, make sure all orfices are clean, install new needle/seat assy,,,,,,,,,,,i work at a small engine shop and found it's easier to go ahead and do it right the first time.

        good luck
