how do you sharpen hedge trimmer blades? I have the echo HC-1600 double sided trimmer. Do the blades stay on or need removed and could I use a dremel tool or is there a better way? thanks

You know, I sharpen my mower blades with a grinder and I know that's not really the proper way, but as far as hedge trimmer blades I don't think I could do something that long and keep it even the length of the blade so I will have those done. If you do sharpen your own let me know how it turns out, it may not be so bad.

I use a small cylindrical grinding stone on a drill to sharpen mine. Or else I take them off and touch them up on the grinder.

If you disassemble the blades carefully from the unit, so as to get them back together properly, they're easily sharpened with a file.
csm, it soundslike you're referring to hedge clippers, which a file also works well on. I have one pair that is drop forged and are very hard. They destroy a file after a while, but then they don't dull very easily

          Sharpening

I use a NEW flat file & a little patience. Try to keep the same bevel. In a pinch I used a chain saw file and it worked ok.
I think the key is get comfortable & take your time. Oh, a GOOD, NEW file.

I use a dremel and it seems to work fine.
