Nothing like putting in wood so it can rot.

One of the easiest selling points for a rock wall? I tell the client that a wooden wall begins to deteriorate the moment the installation is finished. And it's true.

But to each their own, I guess.

Some people want nice timber wall. They look nicer and more natural than a block type wall. This customer's money is the same shade of green as any of my wall customers. I build timber walls so fast and efficient my per hour profit is extremely high.

Timber, block, boulder, stack stone, poured concrete? Take your choice, I'll build it any way you want it, while making an obsence per hour profit.

Phil and Sodbuster are on to something that alot of contractors need to pay more attention to: DOING WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTS (within reason). If there is a better alternative within their price range, give them a choice.

Alot of customers will throw it back at you and say "You're the expert, you tell me". At which point I will say "yes but, you have to live with it".

Customers like choices. But since it's their dime paying you,...

Sell them what they can afford to buy ... that's what it comes down to anyway.

I use to offer (3) alternatives with each (worthwhile sized job) good ... better and best ... Sears Roebuck Style! ... Put the square peg into the square hole. ...

I'm ripping down a timber wall on Monday. Very rotted. The first contractor should have explained that wood doesn't last nearly as long. And in the long run (heck, not that long), stone is best and cheaper.

I'll post some pics! I feel if you show the client some pictures of what the wall will look like later on, they might go with stone.

Some customers just don't know any better and it's up to the contractor to educate them on what is best. If the quick education doesn't sink in, then chose if you want your name on the job or not.

NO, I'm not putting down anyone in this post!

Exactly what we said ... customers like choices, options, good - better - best - money versus value, quality, usefulness and time.

But to keep the deal "simple" ... just sell em what they want! because if you don't ... somebody else will!

Does a person need a contractor's lisence to do this type of work?
