  • Skid-Steer W/Box Rake Question

Can anyone tell me where I can rent a skid-steer, how much it will cost to rent for 1 day, and what kind of deposit is required? Also is it hard to run on a 40 degree angle hill (about 15 feet from top of hill to sidewalk)? I have never operated any kind of tractor before. For a job I have to remove a lawn and lay 3,000 sq ft of sod. What is more cost-effective, a sod cutter or skid-steer? Thank you.

if you never operated equipment, you might want to pass it off. just some advice before you end up spending more than you make.

but to answer part of your question. a dingo/boxer is about 115.00 for 5 hours, that should include deposit or taxes.

The full size skid steer is about the same price, but not necessarily faster if the lawn is cramped.

If the hill is really at a 40 degree angle, and you have never used a skid steer, I would not learn on that steep of a slope.

I am with Erich on the 40 degree grade. I have my own skid steer and wouldn't drive it on a 40 degree grade. Go with the sod cutter, in fact that is how we do it even if I use my skid loader grapple to fork up the sod and load it in the truck. You will have a lot less raking to do with a sod cutter and no ruddes to fill in.

Skid loader can go up and down some very steep grades. However they are prone to rolling if driven across a steep grade. Used in the right way they are a landscaper best tool. However they have issues on wet or soft dirt. They can tear up more than they help. There is a trick to operating one on turf. Long sweeping turns and 3,5,7,&9 point turn are sometimes nessasary. Summer rains in my area just about put them out of commission until fall. The soil is way to soft.
