  • New to Hardscape

I haven't posted on this forum forever (like a year maybe) because I've been so busy, professionally and personally. I have some questions regarding hardscaping. I mainly specialize in garden and landscape (in the beds) maintenance and installs in existing landscapes. However, I've fixed enough of other landscapers' problems to be tempted to do some minor hardscaping, knowing I would do a better job once I learn how. Specifically, flagstones paths, patios, and walls. I love working with flagstone, from my own yard and families' yards. For our area in Michigan, the consensus for dry lay seems to be 4" gravel, 2" slag, then flagstone, for patios and paths. Does this sound right? What resources are available for help with estimating flagstone retaining walls? Are there websites I should visit, books I should buy, etc? For example, I'm looking at doing a terraced retaining wall in flagstone. The drop is about six feet spread over twelve feet. How do I figure the best way to do this job? Spacing between walls, width and depth of base, drainage, etc?
I want to be able to do some of these smaller jobs, and do a good job. I go on to too many jobs that have literally no base, or drainage, and I just figure I can do better, But I just have to take that extra step of learning how.
I would appreciate the advice of anyone with more experience.
    Thank you.
