  • Help Picking Plants

    Hi all,

I live in Virginia Beach VA which as you can imagine is located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. I got my first real landscape job today and am looking for some advice on what plants to use. I can do the physical work but I confess I have zip zero kknowledge of plants outside of grass and weeds.

What I've got to work with is a large bed which runs about 25-30' along the front porch. There is a row of azalea bushes in the bed, with a few feet in between each bush. The bed originally contained 15 small plants..they are green and almost look like a spider plant but with wider blades. Because of an over zealous seed app last year the entire bed is so congested with grass I am removing everything but the bushes and starting from scratch.

Given my location and climate can someone reccomend some ideal plants to put in this bed? Client wants the usual- nice looking but easy to maintain.

Ornamental grasses and barberry are a good start. You could do some hinoki and junipers as well. What is planted besides azalias on the property now?
-Good luck, and dont forget h2o,

Ron Howard: Is that... vodka... and wheat grass?
Homer: It's called a "lawnmower". I invented it. Want one?

There are 2 other small beds around two large oak trees in the front yard but each bed only has an azalea bush in it. Add to that a gree house and you basically have a huge green box.

I'm definately going to look into the barberry to bring a bit of non-green color into the picture. An alternating pattern of azalea-barberry-azalea might be quite nice.
