  • fabric?

i went and looked at a job this morning. Part of it is replacing the mulch w/ stone. I was planning on removing a layer of mulch, putting fabric down, and laying the stone on top. Is this the best way or is there a better way?

Be sure to use the real fabric along with pins...not just some el cheapo fabric.

I have to ask about the fabric. I dont use it at all and have read where others dont either.

I have found that if there is suffecient mulch, you wont need any barrier down. If weeds do start they are easier to remove when you dont have fabric for them to take root in. If you have only much down and weeds do get a start, they havent had an opportunity to root into anything and come right out.

I havent had any complaints, and the gardens where I have put it are weed free.

Why do so many of you use it, and what do you think the benefits are?

Use fabric only on rock installations.....not mulch.

Mulch will decompose atop the fabric, thus leaving a nice media for weeds to sprout from. So what purpose does the fabric then provide????

okay, sometime while reading this thread I saw mulch and fabric and forgot in the original post going from mulch to stone. My bad.

                    Thanks for pointing that out.
