  • 40,000 Christmas Lights

We just finished installing 40,000 lights on this house. Up last year from 30,000. All of them are the mini lights in white except the animated santa that waves from his golf cart. Those have some color. It really lights up the street. Had to put in a seperate electric feed to carry the load. Pics are at the bottom of the project photos page

    ..... Nice Job !!!

I saw on the news that it took 1,800 people to put up all the Christmas decorations at the "Biltmore".

That would have been a nice job to have ?

I'll see if I can get some pictures up of the house that we do lights on (and have for the past 5 years). We use all white mini's and C-9's. Just finished last week and the rough total was around 55,000. Just curious why did you have to put in a separate feed? All you should have needed was around 6-8 more external GFCI outlets on separate breakers. The first year I had 5 added around this guys home front and back. Second year, he wanted to add more lights so we added another 4 outlets. I could see a trend here and money is no option for this guy so I had the electrician add a few more for my conveinience and so I wouldn't have to run cords so far. Next years project will be to get all the external outlets on one timer. This year we have 14 digital timers all synced to within a few seconds. Knowing this guy, he will want everything on X10 so he can control it from his computer next year! I love doing Christmas lights. Just wish I could get a few more jobs...pay is very well! Maybe a little more advertising will be in store for next year.

I dunno how you guys can do it. I don't think I'll ever put up lights for money. I did enough of that crap when I lived at home. Took a day or two to string the lights up. Made it on the local newspaper's light tour a couple times. I guess I burned myself out.....as now I hate stringing up lights.

There is your answer to how I can do it...but no seriously, I just love the season and the lights just add so much to it!

I think that he means the same thing you were mentioning about adding additional GFI boxes. Probably ran all new wire from the panel and had to add a breaker or something.

We put in a seperate feed because the old guy wanted all lights on one kick ass timer, and 400 strands of lights at .3 amps each is 120 amps. then I wired up a feed from his new service to run two breaker boxes out to two sides of the house with 3 duplexs running off of each to cut down on the massive amount of extension cords that would have to be run. It's safer this way too.

I'd like to see a picture of the whole timer assembly if you got one. Like I said, I'm sure I will have to do this next year for the guy I do lights for. BTW...not sure if I've said it before or not, but it looks good! You did a great job.

The timer is a 110volt relay to trip the 2 220 feeds and 4 110 feeds, the whole set up is 2 60 amp 220 feeds sending out to 2 breaker boxes, each of these have 3 quad 110 receptacles on them with their own 20amp breakers. The 4 110 receptacles are each 20 amp. The timer is mounted right beside the electric service and the receptacles just come out of the service box mounted on the side of the house, I rigged up an 8 gauge cable to run the 2 220 feeds around the house, the 4 110's we just run extension cords to them. It got real complicated real quick. I will see if I can get a picture

Not even close, never taken the first test. But I have wired several houses from scratch and installed hundreds of Light/Irrigation/assorted electrical projects. In my area you can actually set the house on fire while you are wiring it, if you want to, and the inspectors might come by and say, "don't do that".....

I've just done it for years and learned as I went. If I need some info. the local supply house is great for info. and my brother is a L.E. I can call him if needed, but I don't need it.

we preach on here all the time about being licensed and insured. i would think it's one thing to be a lawn boy without these, but let's face it, you are wiring houses and don't have these. what are you gonna do when and if you get caught?
