  • I'll stick to my day job

We've been plenty busy this spring just like everyone. It's just crazy here. A week back I answered a call from a couple wanting some stone work done. Normally our designer would handle the meeting, but he had his hands tied up in a huge project. Since I normally sit in the office anymore, just begging to get out once in a while, I volunteered to meet with this couple. It sounded easy enough, nothing too big. Just some flagstone walkways and a fire pit. I met with them, they told me what they wanted and I offered some suggestions. I left with the feeling this would be an easy sell and a nice commission for me. I was just finishing up the proposal when they called again. They changed their mind. They now wanted different stone to be used (color reasons). Easy enough, all I had to do was change out the stone on the proposal. I called them to set up an appointment to seal the deal but they changed their minds yet again. They didn't think they wanted the fire pit now. I told them maybe it'd be best if they worked directly with our in-house designer. I give up, I'll stick to the office.

Welcome to the world of the unwashed public. People like these can't decide what to have for breakfast. But don't give up, you day will come.

Some years ago when we did new projects, my wife endured the same BS. She would get a phase done, and the homeowner would change her mind. After several changes, I was wondering what the woman's problem was. The woman had the gall to complain about how much the project was costing her

Several months later, the *itch brings in another landscaper to finish the project. It pi$$ed off my wife, but I said Good riddence! Some people have no clue that this should have been worked out before the contract was signed. Any change made afterwards is a change order and not for free!
