  • remove a front yard

i have a client that wants most of his front yard replace with a huge bed. it's on a hill and reason for doing this is because it's hard to keep a mower on it.
he wants me to write up a proposal, i'm guessing to design an area and install mulch, trees, junipers, and so on. i haven't taken the measurement yet, but it's about 45ft long and maybe 10ft wide, at the widest part.
figuring the mulch and trees and planting is not problem, but what about taking up all the grass? how do you guys figure that? do you pray paint the outline, then round-up or what?

i havent given it much thought, but this job will be a few thousand bucks. do you guys agree?

    E-Z WAY LAWN.

    thanks

Well, I like the bed idea, if it has to be, better than what I saw yesterday. A home in the area was putting brick pavers in their whole front yard, maybe 1800 square feet. This is a flat area where other lawns are doing fine. I don't do installs, so I won't give advice. I just thought it was odd to remove a lawn for no apparent reason. In your customers case I can understand though.

does the sod cutter work good on a hill side..i've never used one. i know home depot has some for rent.

are there any programs on PC's that you could design a lawn. i saw something at best buy, but wasnt too sure what it was.

          thanks for the info.

figure longer time to cut the grass on a slope. IT is hard pushing the sod cutter uphill.

With out actually seeing the slope and turf, I would probably just spray it and cover it up. Why make extra work when you dont have to? 99% of the time I will spray it and plant/mulch over it.

that's a good idea... what do you spray... round-up? will that work. i think the home owner will go with the cheapest way possilbe.
do i need to put landscape cloth down if i spray?

                  thanks

I use roundup, no fabric, it will only come up and start waving in the wind. After a couple months there will probably be some weeds coming up again in the new garden. This is when I spray with roundup and princep. Princep is a pre emergent that prevents most seeds from growing. The active ingredient is simazine so any product with that in it would work as well. Maybe someone knows of some others.

why not just till the area? if you till it deep enuff you will not get any grass coming back...this is how we make all our beds.

I agree with BC...Roundup, plant, bed pre-emergent, mulch.
