  • Transplanting Daylillies ?

How easy is it to transplant daylillies? Can it even be done? The ones the guy wants trasplanted are at most 1 ft across at the base. How deep is the root system?

    any info appreciated.

    I love doing this

yeah it can be done kinda the wrong time of the yearthough. use a four prong pitch fork to loosen the tubbers the heck outta the dirt - shovel might cut it up some. the root system is very exstensive in the sense that it can form a matted mass, if its a really established bed. if this is so than in a way thats great because the plants ar really going to bennefit from the new leg room (dont forget to feed it with a good bulb feeder and blood meal)the thing is if your up north or anywhere the plant can really go dormant is that now its sprouting new growth and those big green leaves are going to droop like a dead rabbit from the shock, possibly wither and die of too. I transplanted mine last November here in Miami and the leaves fell and stayed down a good three months. though right now I have beautiful orange easter lillies. Why I love digging up subdividable plants for my clients is it gives the opportunity to plant new beds for them with the young off shoots (more money) or if they are not interested its more for my garden. A win win. tell your client its best to do this in the fall or expect the wilted look.

Some Stella D'ora's (sp.?) I dug up last year that didn't have a place to go, wound up overwintering in the edge of my compost pile. They weren't even completely covered at the roots. When I turned the pile in early spring, they got pulled out and still sat for over a month uncovered, above ground. The foliage varied from white to yellow from the lack of light and barely greened up during the month after being exposed to more light. When I fiinally got around to planting stuff this spring, I found a spot to place them. They're doing fine now and I expect they'll bloom along with the others. Hardy little turds I guess.

p.s. this was my own yard, I wouldn't treat a customers plants this way.
