  • I'm hungry! Please pass the grass.

I was Googling through the internet, researching turf repair (another post), and came across some good stuff.

Most of the grains we eat are (from a botanists point of view) part of the "grass" family. Our lawn variety turf grasses as well as rice, wheat, corn, and many more are all part of the "Poaceae" family.

Rice is nothing more than "grass" seed that has been milled to remove the outer husk, then buffed with glucose.

I guess beer and booze are actually "grass" products. But ironically, Marijuana in *not* part of the "grass" family. For those of us that grew up during the 70's,,,,, we were all technically incorrect.

Even bamboo is part of the "grass" family. Another fun fact: Bamboo has been known to grow as fast as 47 inches in a single day! http://www.americanbamboo.org/FAQ.html There have been times in the spring, after a heavy dose of fertilizer, that I could swear my yard came close to that.

I didn't realize grass was such great stuff. We can eat it, drink it, build with it, *and* cut it. But, if you're smoking it, you are not smoking "real grass".

Yep,,, I know. I have waaaaaaay too much time on my hands.

    Thanks,,,, Cliff

if it werent for the cellulose (which we cannot digest) we could eat grass. Actually you could eat it in that you chew it strain the juice for vitamin content and spit the 'cud' out>Any of us get to thinking that grass is over rated? in that in the majority of the world people are growing food to live by where ever they can without getting mauled by tigers etc. not that im an expert it just seems kinda insane to me somedays. what is the second crop? Potatoes or sea weed or what?

It seems kind of silly that we spend millions each year in the U.S. to get foreign grasses to grow on our lawns. But I'm not complaining.

I'll harbor a guess (an educated guess) that it is the solanacea family. I'd be willing to bet on this one. And, technically, some drugs were produced from it in the past, now pretty much just synthesized in the lab.

African and Asian cultures do however utilize this plant family in many ways from building material to fool source and fuel. You have eaten this Plant Families product at one time or another. I would be willing to bet there is a building in your town that has some building material from this Plant Family.

Yes this is a trick question in a way. This Plant family is not commonly utilized on this Continent

You have got to be kidding me. As popular as potatoes and tomatoes are, along with tobacco and peppers, I was pretty sure that it would be solanacea.
