Originally posted by timturfI mow weekly, never remove more than 1/3 of leaf blade, so determine the length of your season.
I guess that is somewhere between one and fifty two times eh?
A USEFUL answer for your question;
I am in zone 5 and we get 32 to 36 cuttings here, depending on year and yard.

I mow every week and my last mowing in zone 7 for me is about the time of the OU/Texas game (usually just the fescue lawns, burmuda is earlier). Starting time depends on Mother nature. As far as figuring some numbers up I would think about when you started mowing your yard last year for your starting time. Figure lower instead of higher. Account for rain days where you might not get to mow for 10 to 15 days due to the weather. Sometimes the spring can be brutal. Also consider whether you will be doing spring clean-ups and scalping. 52 weeks in a year minus about 4 months of nothing.

I am not an expert but I think that this has something to do with it.Originally posted by Hawk83I see some of you guys mentioning "zones", like zone 5, 7... what does that refer to exactly? Though I've been cutting for a while, i 've never heard of any zones...

Mr B to the rescue!
I am in North Texas too, Dallas area.
Delasgh: your assessment of Texas is not baseless!mMuch of the state fits the description you made. Especially West and S Texas. But North and North East Texas are very green and lush and we get a very generous annual rainfall to support lush green landscapes.
But to answer the question, I get about 35 cuts a year, but that being said, with 10 years of clients accumulated, I have learned to weed out the part timers and give great respect to the clients who want weekly year round service. There are many of them, and those are the ones you want! Not the guy who says do it this week and then I'll let you know...

Here in south texas its all about how much rain we get. Its bad during Aug. hot,dry,brown. This is the time of year my once a week clients ask to skip a week or so... if the grass dont need to be cut why cut it?? I wish i could cut it any ways but got to make my customers happy if not there a whole bunch of guys that are willing to work with them. To tell yall the truth I have got 2-3 clients due to them not wanting the yard done once a week they didnt like paying for the yard when it didnt need to be done.

Here in Cali I like to make it by each house once a week. Some weeks due to weather I don't cut. But I still do something around thier yard. Then I ensure they know they are paying for thier yard to always look good. Thus they pay a monthly fee. Now then again I am new to this..... is this common?
Thanks

During winter here the grass goes dormant, plenty of times week after week, we pick up small branches, pine cones & mow up pieces of bark around pine trees, blow surfaces & go.
I like a check a month per customer year round, my checking account loved it & so did my employees. Didn't make a whole lot in the mowing season but about October through March we made a Killing!
