yea, tree trimming isn't easy. Branches have to be removed correctly, otherwise it won't heal correctly and disease can set in. There are many books on it that you can read about it, look for books by Dr. Alex Shigo.

i have to agree with the above. i think anyone is capable of doing small tree clean-up, but when it comes to taking down a 60ft tree next to a house, leave it to the guys who have bucket trucks and very experienced in climbing.

when i come across a tree that needs to be removed, i call my guy and he adds on my end and i make a little and dont lift a finger.

And also, if you add tree work to your liability insurance, the increase may not cover what you'd make off little odd tree jobs. If they don't ask about insurance when you're doing their lawns, I promise you they will if you're doing tree work. Same with roof work.

the international society of aboriculture is one of the best places to receive certification. they have an in depth study course. it covers safety, proper trimming, disease identification, and fertilization. as well as identification . many people who know what they are looking for, search out a certified arborist. by getting certified has a potential to put big money in the pocket.their website is www.isa-arbor.com
check it out. the study guide alone is worth the $160.00. with the study guide you get the book, and cds to go along with it. its packed with awesome knowledge for anyone seriously considering tree work.

If you enjoy working with trees they pay really well. You don't need a bucket truck either. A couple good saws, climbing harness, ladders, and experience is what you want for the backyard jobs.
