  • Top soil, please help

I did a job for this one women, a spring clean up. Then she gave my number to her sister her sister called me and she wants a whole lot of stuff done, also this ladys house is huge I went to her house and she wants to add new soil in all the little strips of gardnes shes got
These arre the measurments I took (each strip, there are 10 Islands), this lady wants about an in. added of top soil to each strip, lets say I get the yard of top soil for $10 , how many yards would I need, how long you guys think it will take me with 2 guys helping me and how much should I charge her

    Measurments of each Island

    2ft * 10ft area=20 sp ft
    2 1/2 * 33ft area=82.5 sq ft
    2ft 7ft area=14 sq ft
    3ft 17ft area=51 sq ft
    3ft 16ft area=48 sq ft
    3ft 12ft area=36 sq ft
    21/2 7ft area=17.5 sq ft
    2ft 7ft area=14 sq ft
    3ft 16ft area=48 sq ft
    3ft 6ft area=18 sq ft

    TOTAL=349 SQ FT

    349 / 27 (cu.ft. per yard) = About 12
    12 / 12 (inches per foot) = About 1

I don't do much landscaping but I figure that 1 yard should do it. Now, that is if you get it 1" exactly. If you are off by 1/2 an inch then that makes a big difference.

I don't give estimates before I do a job. For regular mowing I do but not for any clean ups or anything. I tell the customer that it will be $40 per man-hour for however long it takes me. But, for this, I would guess that it would take about 4 man-hours so that figures to $160. Add a little for a fudge factor and make it $200 - labor only.

Normally, I would say yes but you have so many different beds that there will be extra time. You also have to factor in your time to get the dirt as well as spreading it. Then, if you accidently put 2" in some beds, you have to move it around.

The tendency is to say "Oh, that will be easy, it will only take X time" but then you get into it and it is much more than you expected.
