  • Stick Edgers

Hi there: New member today been a guest often. Has anyone here any experience with stick edgers? Are they any good for making new edges or just for maintaining existing edges? I'm looking at the Echo interchangeable head unit. I presently own a Trimrite walk behind edger which slips every time it hits any amount of sod. This is a serious problem not so much with existing customers but with neighbours asking me to edge their properties which haven't been edged in eons.

Any thoughts or opinions pro or con appreciated.

          stick edging or line trimmer?

what do you guys use to edge with usually? i normally pull out the blade edger alot, it seems faster.. i like the edge it puts along the sidewalks and drives.. i usually edge out bedlines real quick with the trimmer tho.. i got one customer who rathered me use the line trimmer on all the edging, didn't quite understand that... didn't notice much of a difference in appearance.

Husky makes good stick edgers. I have a 225ld, real good edger.

Little Wonder walk behind edgers are the only ones I use. 90 feet per minute just as straight as an arrow. Little hard getting used to curves but not bad after you have done a few. I have 3 little wonders 0 stick edgers

I use a stihl stick edger for initial and maintaining edges. The stick edger is the way to go for maintaining but for initial edgings I wish I had a walk behind for that. I haven't had a single problem with the stihl. I would recommend it.

I own a stihl and have no problems with it at all. I too would recomend them as a product. as far as comparing them to a string trimmer, no flying debris with a stick edger. for me I can go alot faster with a stick edger and it is more true. but beware of sprinkler heads they are no match for the stick edger. and if you have an area that has hi rise sprinkler heads it pays to be efficient in the use of the trimmer as an edger because you wont be able to mow over that area and so it would need trimmed and if you edge with the trimmer you can save yourself a trip to the truck to get the trimmer later. just some thoughts.shoal

one account of mine is edge and trim only. it is hundreds of feet, 300 + easy. no way anyone would pay $1.00 per foot edge fee for 300+ feet a week, but that is another topic.

first time i used my husq edger. took forever, 1 hour 15 minutes. never been edged. it bogged down and had 20 or 25 heads right against the driveways and curbs. Next edge was easier, 1 hour, as i reamed it out to like 3 inches deep first time.

now for speed and so i make money, i use my husq commercial trimmer. it now takes 20 minutes to edge. i am pretty darn good with it and you cant tell a difference between it and the edger, if you know how to edge with a trimmer and dont ream the dirt with it.

so i say buy a good edger, stick or walk-behind, for initial time or two and maintain with trimmer if you are good at it. follow up with edger when needed. some of the wiser lawn guys might disagree, but it works great for me anyway.

I have had had problems with every peice of Echo equipment i bought. This could be due to the dealer or to Echo changing their carbs or both. I bought an Echo string trimmer and within 2 weeks it was back at the shop. I also bought a pole pruner and I didn't even get it out of the shop. They went to show me how it worked and it didn't. They had to bring it back into there maintenance shop and repair it. The dealer is also hard to work with.
I also had problems with Maruyama equipment/dealers. It is probably just my area but they will never get my business again.

I have had real good support from my Stihl, Shindawa and Kawasaki dealers but have had the best support and prices from the Cub Cadet dealer.

I have a Cub Cadet Commercial edger and it has worked great for me for the last 3 years so far. It is always on the truck and runs every day. I have a push edger but it doesn't get used but just a couple of times a year at the most since it have bought the stick edger.
