Looking into buying a aerator and wanted to know...what is the best type. I know that spiking is a no no. I will not buy that, I am looking into coring aerators. What is better, a pull behind that you have to but cinderblocks on or a power aerator. Is there much of a difference besides price?

I have a pull behind, its okay for once in a blue moon. I rented a power aerator this weekend to knock out a few jobs I had lined up. No comparison between the two. The power aerator is easy to use and makes pretty quick work of the yard. Every time I can line up a few yards for aerating, I'll rent the power aerator.

I just aerated all saturday. I rented a power aerator. It was a Ryan but I prefer the Bluebird. The problem with the power aerator is that its pretty heavy to move around and it really takes it out of yah when your doing 20 a day.

I bought a Bluebird 424 used for $500 last year. It works great (Honda engine) and it has already paid for it self and then some. The only thing is, I wish it was a little wider than 18" or so. So far, I've only run it about 3 hours straight and it wasn't too bad.....until the next day when my hands & forearms felt like they were 90 years old. When this one dies, I'll be checking out one of those "Turnaerer" models.

Lawn and landscape business owners discuss, share, compare and review all different types of commercial lawn and landscape equipment, trucks, trailers and more.

Depends on what size the yards you are doing are. If they are regular Single Family yards, then a powered Aerator could be used. If its more than an acre, I would use a tow behind model. Keep in mind that most of the time, more than one pass is needed. We have two Agri-Fab Aerators being towed at once so that we will only have to make one pass.. Cuts our time in half..
