Going to start mowing as a sideline income. Checked into some insurance to cover broken windows (autos esp.). Cost over $300 per year and that's just me and my family operating it. Am I stupid to be "very careful" and get along without the insurance? I know that a lot will say I'm grossly stupid, but I got a full-time job and was doing the extra mowing for extra cash and pay off the new mower, which I can use in my yard. don't care to work for the insurance company all year, so I can have coverage for 3 or 4 months. What are your opinions? Thanks in advance! What an informative web site!

i have wondered the same thing, but a broken window could cost more than $300.00. And the thought of something worse happening, getting sued ect is not worth it in my book.

Just Say Uncle & I shut up...

I wouldn't leave my house without Insurance. (Period)

Busting out a $300 or $500 Window is pocket change, what if a rock flies out across the street & hit someone in the Eye? What if your Rock goes through a Pella Window & then rips a hole in a Thomas Kinkade Original oil painting?

What if your driving down the road pulling a trailer & somebody pulls out in front of you & you hit their Cadillac SUV going only 40 mph. Do you think your Homeowners Insurance will cover that wreck? Biff & Lizzy can't afford the SUV to start with & you can bet your Bippy that one will get a Hurt Neck & the other hurts their Back... That's a Paid for SUV, Sea cruises, Pedicures & a few good nights at the Platinum club.

$200,000 will not cover that wreck, so the insurance company refuses to pay because your a Commercial Company with Homeowners Insurance...BTW it don't matter how bad your hurt because when see those Tons of Banged up Cadillac SUV, Biff & Lizzy going to the Hospital in Matching Neck Braces & Ambulances your Broke Arm & Busted nose will not hurt at all & You will not even notice your Totaled Truck, Trailer & Equipment...

All you'll see is giving your Home & everything else away & if your here in Georgia unless the laws have changed in the past 10 or 15 years even if you have Corp., LLC or LSMFT after your business name you will lose everything & then your stuck with a High Maintenance Family that you can't afford.

Hell I got a high Maintenance Family that I'm about ready to get rid of, if they don't quit sticking Paint Brushes in my hand & saying my car is making a Funny noise... Am I supposed to laugh at the funny noise or put down the paint brush & crawl under 1 of those 3 cars that I make payments on so they can ride in Style.

How about the guy that's cutting grass in the Back Yard & the kids in the front start driving their bikes up the trailer ramp & finally one of them breaks their collar bone & is laying in back of the trailer. $5,000 later oh that was 20 years ago, that's $25,000 now. I knew the Guy, he owns Cato's nursery now.

How about old Bubba comes up to me at Blalock Machinery & says hey Dave, I got this House in Double Gate that I cut on Saturday after Lunch & they have a Girl in college & she has friends over at their pool, you want to come over & see them... No Bubba, I don't care nothing about seeing Topless College Girls, if they looked that good they would be at the Platinum Club or be out doing something besides Chillin together at Mom's & Dad's pool.

About 3 Months later I run into Bubba & Sure enough he got the Triple College Girl Trifecta, poor old Bubba ran that Snapper Rear Engine Rider into the Deep end of the Pool & Ripped the Liner... Bubba is now at the Post Office over on Westover Road he's almost got 30 years in, he died 10 years ago at the post office he's now the Postmaster & he tears guys up that sticks fliers in mail boxes & yes he died 10 years ago there but he's still gets those checks electronically deposited into the bank & he's always got overtime T00! The Dead do work at the Post Office!

Say Uncle & I'll quit my rant about not having insurance...

I've got many rants posted here about not having insurance... I do not even have a company vehicle & I carry a extra $500K Liability on my personal vehicles. I was sued 3 times between 1995 & 2000 because of vehicles I owned but I didn't drive, all I needed was my name on the Title... I actually clinch up every time I drive by the Post office because of all the old folks that go there & if it's asphalt it's their lane... Do you think you could beat an 82 year old Disabled WW2 Vet, with heart problems & Diabetes... I couldn't beat him he was wrong & I lost.

Medicare or Medicaid, (sorry I can't think straight thinking about it) sued me for $42,000, my insurance was canceled. The WW2 guy hit my daughters car in a 35mph zone, his skid marks was 172 feet long after he busted out my daughters headlight only, he then went another 100 plus feet down in a embankment got out of his Totaled 1996 Lincoln Town Car & as he got to the top of the ditch he had a heart attack, he was not even scratched or bruised just had a frigging heart attack & some Low Life Scum Bag Lying Doctor said it was caused by the Wreck.

I think I can tell 20 more stories that I actually know about...

If you don't own anything & don't never want anything, you probably don't need insurance?

I spend far more on Insurance than I do payments on my 5 acre Property with 2 acre lake & 3,200 sq.ft. home, I'm Insurance Poor & I still don't have enough but if I ever see Biff & Break his Jaw & accidentally knock Lizzy down while taking a swing at Biff... I'm covered with plenty of Liability Insurance, I even have a Million Coverage at the shop & an extra Million Umbrella coverage...

Good Luck, OH BTW I'm fixing to take my Daughter to Soccer practice & I got to drive by that damn Post Office!

You don't need insurance and business expenses ... you need a better paying job.

At only $300, one of your days out working will pay for a whole years worth of needed insurance.

P.S. --------> GrassMaster, I think it's time for you to write a book!

I sure hope you plan to make more than $300 in a year. Wouldnt be worth the effort to me If I was only shooting for $300. I do shift work and am on 3pm to 11pm, I worked part of last Thurs. morn. and Fri. I could cover that cost. As you can tell I am only partime.

It is well worth the $$.....just reread GMs post a few times....lol

                    OK, thanks

You convinced me-the insurance is cheap, at any price. There are probably a dozen "Dad's and sons" doing the lawn mowing business here, parttime, after work and weekends, etc. All I was going to do was about 5 or so jobs, plus a relative that I do for a little extra green. The relative will proably have me "flush" on the new rider this year! I'm committed to my full-time job (EMT-ambulance) for 84 hours a week now and was going to do the lawn thing for a few $$$ and to pay off the new rider. Thanks for your comments. I'd be the one to need the insurance, esp if I didn't have it!

GOOD GRIEF CHARLIE BROWN, if you can't afford that, don't go into business!!
