  • When to hire help?

THis is my first year. I am a teacher full time and am currently doing 23 accounts (average $35 per account). I can do the work by myself in four days after school. I'm not taking any more accounts in case of rain days durring the school year. With summer break soon apon me I'm thinking of taking on more accounts, but when school starts up agian I wont be able to do all the work. Should I just stay where I"m at or train someone I can trust over the summer that can do the added work when I"m in school? To grow or not, that is the question?

Go further ... consider hiring and training a "crew leader" who can supervise when you can't.

      Same situation

Hey Man, I'm in the same boat as you, except I've already started training a guy to help me in the crunch. He is 17 and a student at our school. Very good kid, honest, trustworthy, and dependable. The costs of his labor are more than worth it. He's going with me one day a week right now and he is passing out fliers two other days. As we grow his role will grow. Good Luck man!!

Nice to know someone else is out thier in the same boat. I wish I lived closer to the school I teach at. I'm 40 min. away, If I was closer I would have some great kids to choose from. How dose your ins. work with a 17 yrs old when he starts driving the truck?

Temp agencys have the sh*t of the earth. A buddy of mine hired temps to construct a large retaining wall and he could work as fast as 4 of the temps put together.

You using someone on a part-time basis, mariner? What obligations do you have concerning insurance, and workmans comp?

When Yesterday seems it was a week ago, when you don't know for sure what day it is, when you have to stop and think of your name, when you get home at 9pm. and yer arse arrives as you are leaving for the next day's work, You will know you need help. But be forewarned hiring help adds 2 more hours work to you darn near full work day.

                        Phils Advise..........O.K Phil,!!!!

Sounds like this would be the best time to find a good second person ,to learn how to run a crew....Take phils advice, and find the perfect someone...

23 accounts at $35 a pop is pretty good money considering your just starting out, and if your working on your own, i will assume your expenses for equiptment and overhead are pretty low....I am assumeing the cuts are weekly ,but regardless you sound like your on your way, at $800 pr week...

Hire someone you can trust, and you should be able to land a few more jobs expanding your extra $805 income to over $1000 pr week...

To find the right person, have you considered asking another teacher???The person would be in a similar situation as you in the school, and you would be able to more easily judge if they have the extra time required to do the required work....

Considering you have the 23 customers ,and are makeing the $35 for each cut ,the extra person would be cheap insurance in the event you break down ,became ill, or got hurt...

God forbid, but the unexpected can happen at the most inconvienent times, and you have to be prepared for the bad ,as well as the good, when in bussiness for yourself....A second person ,that is capeable of doing the work is as important as haveing a backup mower in the event somthing breaks down...

I have no idea what above person is saying but guess he is inferring you should stay small, not grow, and everything else to discourage you from haveing a nice ,prosperous bussiness....

Some offer only negative feedback ,and do not want to see you succeed....

He obviously can not get his bussiness to grow ,because he cant get along with anyone, and admits it in his post....

Time for this joker to get counceling!!!!

I would stay away from such clowns!!!

Sounds like he is mentally challanged, or is a very heavy drinker....

I`ll go with him being mentally challanged ,and a heavy ,heavy drinker, as he freely admits what he goes through ,and how he cant work with anyone....

Good luck, dont let people who think negetive discourage your growth ,and be carefull if they abuse alcohal to the point where they cant remember what they did the day before....

                        BEST WISHES,TRANS....................

Transman.... Thanks. I think once school is out I will find someone to work with. Do it on a trial basis and see what happens. I would really want someone that could work durring the day while I"m at work so I don't think the answer is another teacher. But I like the idea if I was going to work with the person all the time. Another great day to mow today.... just need to get this danm A-sec. V-belt changed fast! Snapped on Sat. grrrrrrrrr
