Cutting bermuda short

I was told that the way to get bermuda to spread and get thick was to cut it shorter and put it under "stress."

Any truth to that theory? Does bermuda thrive under stress?

bermuda can handle short cutting and will spread unlike fescue. You can fertilize it when it starts coming up to help as well. Here in NC it doesn't really start thickening up until June.

Depends on the type of Bermuda

We sharpen reel mowers for customers that have bermuda & zoysia grass.

We have one customer that has bermuda that looks like a putting green, he pitches a fit if we don't have the cutting height set at 5/32" yes I said Five Thirty Seconds of an inch. Most bermudas could easily handle 1/2 inch or less in height. The proper way to cut it is with a reel type mower.

The reason people let it get high is because it saves on water, reduces weeds and they can't afford using a reel mower because of high cost & maintenance. When bermuda gets to high and it don't have be much to be too high, it will look like its dead just a little below the surface & it being high increases thatch build up.

I can ride by a lawn & tell if its cut with a reel type mower! It's real easy it looks like a putting green.

The shorter you cut it the better, it will not look good at first but soon it will. Make sure those blades are good & sharp!

There is nothing sweeter in the grass game than bermuda cut at .175"

Lowest I've seen is .110 during a tournament in 2001. It only had to be that low for 3 days then they seeded, fertilized and gave the grass 3 weeks to recover.

Poor old GrassMaster back around 1975 Traded a Killer 69 SS396, with shaved ported & polished heads with oversize Intake & Exhaust for a 440 Magnum Charger, 2-4 Barrel Holley's, 4-Speed Hurst, Dana 60 Rear end, Offenhauser Intake, Mickey Thompson Headers with Cherry Bombs bolted to them with Scat Trak 50's on the back, 3/4 cam I thinks? The gas burner had over $2,000 did on the inside of the engine. It would fly & sounded like rolling thunder going down the road! LOL, I could Kick it & the Glove box would fly open! The Girls Loved it!

If I took off in first gear all I did was spin that positraction with the 50's unless I let off the gas, If I took my time about the time I shift to second or between second & 3rd I even walked off & left the Yellow 454 Vette in town! It was no problem filling the car up with girls, it was more of a problem getting them out & keeping the police off of me.

I kept the car about 4 or 5 weeks & got my SS396 back, it had A/C & auto trans, it was better on dates & it would spin (Bark) about 50' when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Those were the days! YEEEEHA!

If someone would tell me how to post a picture on here I will send a fews pics of the car in the various stages it has been in since I bought it. I have pulled the original 440 from the car, built it to factory specifications and placed it in storage since it is the original engine for the car....I dont want anything happening to it and lose the value of my car. It currently has a 500 cubic inch wedge motor cranking out about 610 horses. I purchased the 500 from Mopar Performance brand new as a short block (no cylinder heads) and built it to MY specifications, lol. I run a 727 auto trans with a Dana 60 rear with 4:30 gears and posi differential. Although the car is a somewhat rarity and the value is unquestionable (between 55 and 85 grand) it is still a musclecar and was built to run. On occassion when I feel the need for speed I will take it to the local drag strip and let 'er loose. The best time I have clocked in it so far is 10.89 seconds at 137 miles per hour. Zero to sixty is just a hair over two seconds. Other than that I take it for joy rides around town and I even drive it to church on occassion.
