  • Scalping question

This is my first year using a larger deck mower (52" ZTR) I am noticing that the height has to be set higher than say a 36" deck or you start scalping. Anything less that 3.5 - 4" will scalp if the land is not totally flat. Are they all like this?

Is it a fixed deck or floating?

I run a 61" Scag TT and don't have that problem unless there's a small mound or I'm rounding the top edge of a hill. In cases like those I use the foot lift lever to slightly raise the deck. You may also want to check your anti-scalp rollers and blade spacers to make sure it's set up correctly.

Foot lift! Works on the Ferris too! Just raise it slightly over mounds, topping inclines, etc. Seemed obvious to my newby arse...

Some 52" ZTR's don't have the foot assist.

Its a Husqvarna 52" ZTR with a floating deck. Scalping rollers are set properly and I do use the foot assist pedal like your talking about. I guess the bigger decks need flat ground. I'm just going to keep it set at 3.75-4"

Mariner, that seems odd, I would take it back and have them go over the machine. I have heard a lot of good things about those mowers so I suspect something is not adjusted correctly.

The scalping occurs when there is a sudden low or high spot in the lawn. I'm sure nothing is wrong with the machine. I used to use 36" mowers before this so this is my 1st year with a larger deck unit.
