Slice it up w/ a spade.

Slice flat uder than pry up slightly,,, than slice in again. Can usually take 1/2 the length of the spade and as wide as you want at once.

Try a mattock if you don't want to save the turf. You will find it a lot faster and easier than a shovel.

Cut strips with your edger. Then sharpen your flat shovel & get tuff.

Isn't that tool called an adze (sp) ?

          Never heard of Mattock.

I have some round-up up that will take care of it. Screw getting it up.

An adze has a bit more curvature and only one blade, (the one on the left in the photo), shorter blade length, oriented perpendicular to handle.

The mattock tool is very useful for small (any) tree (root) removal, cutting cable and PVC, sewer and gas lines.

The one pictured is a Mattock tool. One side is useful for what you desire and what I describe, the other side is better suited for the things I mention, but would suck for sod.

              (Ric knows his ****.)

Pick one up at a yard sale and find out.

LAME. You got a Q? Ask it. You got way less answers with your misdirection.

Why don't you want to use a sod cutter?

I've never used a gas powered sod cutter. I go the the rental shop and rent a manual sod cutter which cost $10.00 for the day.

Unless you have a mule to pull that manuel sod cutter, You must really like to work and have a strong back.
