I too have a 97 Chevy K1500. After about a 20 mile trip or so in the summer while it's warm, the shift between 1st to 2nd seems very hard. I dont know if you have ever experiensed this but I was just wondering if that is a common problem with those models or if it is just me. Sorry for getting off topic...
The hard 1-2 upshift when hot means the transmission is operating in its "error mode", so to speak. The 4L60E transmission has a serious problem with the valve that locks up the torque converter. The cylinder wears, and then there is fluid leakage around the piston, which prevents the torque converter from fully locking up. This causes wear of the carbon fiber clutch inside the torque converter, which colors the transmission fluid VERY dark, usually without having a burned odor.

I'll bet the "Service Engine Soon" light is on, and if you scan it, you will get back the code 1870 (on OBD2 trucks anyhow, I believe yours could have the OBD2 OR the earlier model computer). The code 1870 on OBD2 GM's means "Transmission Component Slipping", which translates to the torque converter not locking up.

If there is no trouble code as of yet, you can have the valve body bored and sleeved, which will fix the problem as long as the carbon fiber clutch hasn't disintegrated. It runs about $300.00 or so. Go to a REPUTABLE transmission shop!

I went through the same thing. Unfortunately, the previous owner of my truck decided to just drive it with the SES light on. This caused MAJOR damage to the torque converter, and I ended up having the transmission and torque converter rebuilt.

Now, Seascape has a 1998 Chevy a lot like mine (mine is the K1500, his is the C-1500), and he has opted to just drive it until it dies. You can do that too I guess. Because I plow snow, I opted to just fix it.

        Good luck.
