Is an Edger Necesary

[Really Well Cut]

I currently do not own any type of edger. When I do jobs I will just hit every thing with the whacker and it does a decent job. I no edgers can be quite expensive, do I really need one. Sometimes when used I noticed that edgers do not make the lawn look good. What do you think?

Hello Really Well Cut:

I always used a Straight Shaft Trimmer with a Lot of Power for my Edging. I could Edge with it very Nicely.

There is Others that Swear by the Stick Edger with the Blade. I've never Used one, Mainly because I've Been Happy with the Results of the Trimmer.

I found out that if you stay on the Grass Side when Edging & Walk Backwards doing it, that it Works Best for Me. Again I'm Sure others will Feel Differently?

I have Received Plenty of Jobs because of My Edging & All were Very Well Pleased with the Results. To Each his Own?

Look for a good deal on a stick edger. You'll never know when you'll need it.
I could never get by using the string trimmer on some of my commercial accounts for edging. Some have several thousand feet of curb and sidewalk to edge. With the stick I can walk at a pretty fast clip. For the tree rings and beds the string works great.
For residential use a string will work fine.

I use an edger the first time and about every fifth time. The first edging makes a nice cut (sharp blade) that the string can keep up to five times. Most accounts have st. aug. so the runners need to be cut. I've not used a stick but I will try one soon.

i have a shindiawa stick edger and i am very happy with it so are my customers. They would mention it suttily and i finally desided to satisfie them. they love it

I too have never needed one. 15 years and well over 30,000 cuts later? No blades needed.

Unless that edge is SERIOUSLY over the sidewalk, a good string trimmer will go right through it, even if there is sod hanging over. Hold the trimmer sideways (not upside down) so it is perpendicular to the sidewalk or flower bed. No problem.

Just my opinion.

I just bought a new sthil fc-75 pro-series stick edger. I use a Mclain walk-behind for the first cut in, but after that, the stick is it. I'm sure that you can per-fect a good edge job with the string and I have done it but for me the stick is faster and like a string you can manipulate it to any angle you want.

They make a tool for every job. A stick is no more money than a trimmer. You have to figure that your trimmer will last longer if your not spending all that time edging with it. If a stick is faster than your making more $$..

Just one more opinion.. You know what they say about those <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

When you get enough edging to overwhem you, you will get an edger.
McLain with 3.5 Honda and oil bath air breather is an excellent one.

I suggest getting the edger because it can be really useful for jobs besides edging. For example this one lady I worked for had a brick walkway in front of her house where every crack was filled with moss, dirt, and weeds. She didn't want any chemicals used to kill this stuff off, so I took the blade edger and ran it in between the cracks. Took me much less time and money for her if I had done by hand and the effect was amazing, the brick looked brand new. Also if you ever have to remove sod from small areas ( like if you were establishing a deep edge), the edger is a good tool for creating a cut for you to put a spade in and pull it out.

you should never edge with a weedwacker, nor should you weedwack, with an edger. weedwacker edging is non professional to look at, takes too long, and is too physically demanding on the operater. do it right, or not at all.

This thread is 4 years old....but yes a string trimmer, if you are skilled at using it, can produce a nice edge.

so can a butterknife, but butterknives, are for buttering bread. we added stick edgers as opposed to walk behind edger, and saved time + money while doing a professional edge. weedwacker edging is not professional. period

I use a 3 wheeled edger with a 3.5 honda motor, it gives a good finish, bear in mind the steel blade travels at around 300 miles per hour and do not forget to tighten the nut holding the blade and do not hit a rock through a window

I agree...not to mention that edging with a string trimmer will break windows much easier then using a professional tool.

every time i use a string trimmer to edge i get cuts on my face from small rocks, given i dont have the guard on my trimmer but for me the stick edger is waaay faster, i can virtually run with that thing.
