• Mulching or Discharging?

I was wondering what everyone thinks regarding using a mulching kit on a mower or just discharging it.

Almost impossible to mulch bluegrass until July most years in Penna. You just let if fly or bag it.

But St. Aug grass is an easy mulch vs. bluegrass. With the lawns being smaller in Fla vs. semi-rural Penna. mulching is a bettter choice in FLA with all those landscape beds to go around.

Discharge in spring. Mulch in summer & fall. Put the mulch kits on when spring growth slows. Bagging is for scrubs.

Other than that, I only use the vac for leaves.

I am in North East Florida so everything is mostly St Augustine grass. I have a exmark with a mulching kit, but if the grass is wet from rain or a sprinkler system it doesn't mulch to good.

St. Augustine here. Mulch all but first couple of cuts in the spring.

Where have you been while you were down here? Retirement parks?
I've got several residential that are 1 plus acre and all my commercial are well over one acre in size.
DO NOT speak for me. You do not have a GD clue about the real Florida.

When the grass is thick and lush, bag it. When it is hot and the grass is thiner, mulch it. Simple!

Green (head) Giant if you consider where you live to be REAL FLA be my guest. But most rich folks from the North retire in FLA near the water by the shoreline to get a breeze.

The stinking hot no breeze interior land is dirt cheap (therefore the lots are bigger than one on the intercoastal waterway) and the only people that want to live there are new Mexican immigrants.

For instance a 80 x 140 lot with a seawall in the back and direct sailboat access to the gulf costs $140k but the same size landlocked lot near I-75 is only $5k.

If I could stand the heat and humidity I would be setting up shop in Naples and Marco Island area. You might want to take my clue but you will need to pass the FLA commercial pesticide applicator test for unlicensed lawn cutters need not apply to that upscale market.

I hope this helps.

You talk of coming down here for a few months out of the year to work for someone who does chemical applications. Why? If you are as busy as you claim why do you need to work for someone else?
You talk in another thread of fixing a van up so you can, from the sounds of it,live in it. You also talk of loading equipment in the back of a 1/2 ton pickup to do commercial work. Real "professional" for someone that likes to preach about how things should look and how they should be done.
As for your knowledge of Fla. real estate prices you don't know squat.
$5K for land near I-75. LMAO! Yeah, maybe 15 years ago! Your prices on waterfront property are way off too. I know quite a few people near water in Pinellas Cty. Also down near Punta Gorda. They would die laughing reading your response.
As for your comment about getting certified. Been there, done that. Was certified in Wisc. also. They are one of the toughest states to get certified in.
IMO I think you are un-easy with Fla. because it's a tough market. Too much for you to deal with.
Good luck with your home on wheels(van),little 1/2 ton PU or whatever the hell you live in.
At least we now know where you live when you come down to Fla.

5k will not buy anthing but a used car in PC, FL. 140k on the water, maybe on a little 5 acre lake deep in this sticks. This past spring I was chatting with my buddy that works for Century21 and I mentioned that I'd like a piece of property on the water in the low $150k's, he just chuckled. "In Bay county you can't get a piece of property on the bay under $200k and that's prior to clearing it." Instead I bought an acre about 100yds from a large lake, Deer Point Lake, and it cost me $20k and I still have to clear it, not to mention that it always has a little breeze. I have seen property for sell in Florida for $5k per acre but you have to buy a minimum of 20 acres and still clear it.

Mulching or Discharge?
I always mulch, and bag only if I'm paid extremely well.

Remember guys this is a topic about Mulching and discharging grass. I don’t want to sound rude but it’s cluttering the thread.

I'm with Scott when it comes to bagging. Just because you bag lawns doesn’t mean you’re a scrub. If your getting paid enough its worth the time.

in MI it only grows fast in the spring and your working your tail off to keep up. Today was the first decent rain we've had in 2 weeks.
A few sprinkles but nothing to keep it green!
