  • Let's talk cement...

I've got a client whose driveway has sunk at the end near the curb. She's complaining of bottoming out as she backs her car out of the driveway, and has asked if I would be willing to repair it. She's pretty much my hottest client, so I'd probably clean her toilet if she were to ask. Anyway, my question: Anybody have any experience with concrete? I'm assuming a few bags of Quickrete is the answer but am not certain if there is a better method. Also, other than cleaning the surface, any specifics on preperation to increase success rate of adhesion.

What you say??? This is a lawn service forum???

I was a plant manager at one of the largest concrete companies around Detroit. It sounds like the approach is bad, my advise sub it to someone with experience and make a few bucks off it. That is not a quick fix with quick crete!

        Concrete, of course.

L&R, I had a feeling somebody would poo-poo the Quickrete idea. What is it with that stuff? The only time I ever hear anything good about it is when I see a television advertisement. Is it good for anything? A ballpark figure on the cost of repair on a 16-foot wide approach, sunk at about 1.5 inches? Ballpark, like $300 or $800. Thanks for your expertise.

Is the concrete broken up? If not, maybe mudjacking is the answer.
It must have been a pretty good slope before it settled if 1.5" is causing scraping. Maybe her springs are fatigued, although you say she is hot so I doubt her rear end is sagging... What's she drive?

I've been out of that Biz for about 3 years since starting my own company. However I believe companies still charge aroud $4.50 per sq foot for tear out and replace. Approaches are not that difficult but if you have never done it before they can be a pain. Plus if there is a sidewalk running thru the approach then yopu have city codes to deal with. Quick crete is best used for setting posts small Bar B Que stands and things of that nature in my opinion. Let me know where you are located and I can probably hook you up with somone dependable.

Other than that it's sinking, the concrete is in good condition. But the driveway was indeed already at a significant grade. And no, her trunk is definitely in fine, fine condition. Roomy, but not too roomy. It's her Volvo's trunk that is of concern.

L&R, My client resides in Commerce Township. No existing sidewalk.
