  • Can someone give me some info on 2 mowers

I was looking at purchasing a used ztr. The local exmark dealer has 2 used units he is selling. One is an exmark that has a 17hp kawasaki with a 44" deck. It looks to be in great shape with 489 hours on it. Looks like it was taken care of. They are wanting $2900 which seems to be a steal.

the second is a husqvarna commercial mower wiht a 42" deck and 17hp kawasaki with 389 hours. It looks to be in great shape also but he said the guy didnt like the manual deck adjuster so he traded it for a larger exmark. He is wanting $2200 for it.

I dont know the model numbers but does anyone have any info on which would be the better mower.

I'm very partial to Exmark, I've used most makes of commercial mowers I think it's the best one out there. The 44" might be old, I don't think they've had that cutting width for a few years. I could be wrong. Sounds like good prices for the number of hours.

I spoke with the dealer and he said he sold the unit new in march of 02. He said he has done all the maintanence on it and has all the service records. It looked pretty good when i saw it earlier today but he said they cleaned it up, put a new belt on it, checked everything over and replaced the grip pads on the floor. He said I wont recognize it it looks so much better. I didnt think it looked bad in the first place. I am going to pick it up tomorrow.

Question, are these riders or walk-behinds? The prices are in-line where they ought to be. Forget the years in which they where made....that's all horses*it. All that matters is their condition. Both sport low hours, both "look" to be in great shape, both should be great buys!

Before purchasing, check all blade spindles for side-to-side play. Do this by grabbing one side of the blade and try to push it up and down. Nothing? Good! Something? A little play? The spindles are worn. I just purchased a used Toro Z-master with 300 some hours. I didn't bother to check this.....figured the low hours meant they'd be just fine. Yeah, come to find out 2 of the 3 spindles where shot...perdy bad at that! Luckily I rebuilt both spindles within 3 hours myself for just $28 in parts.

            A 42-44" ZTR is a worthless machine.

They are completely unstable on any real side hill do to the narrow width.

Plus they have no deck offset and therefore will have poor trimming capabilities.

The only type of 42-44" mower you should be looking at is a hydro walk with a swivel caster wheel sulky.
Hydro DRIVE® rules the turf much like Britannia ruled the waves

Thanks for the tip master mower. I will check that. When I went to look at it he had it in the shop servicing it up. He said they checked all the bearings and pulleys, thats why they changed the belt. He was fussing at the mechanic because it was missing a bolt in the seat. He made him go find one and replace it. I also asked about the hydro filters and he is going to check the records and replace them if neccasary.
He said the oil looked good so they didnt change it so I will when I get home, what do they recommend for the kawi engines in 100 degree heat?
              Yes they are both ztrs.
