Sod!!!????!!!??

Is there a trick to laying/ installing sod, or is it jsut a matter of unrolling it?? i've never done a sod job b4, but i have a big one coming up and i want to make sure i do it right!! any ideas, comments or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!! thanks guy,

sometimes best to make sure the ends don't meet on the next row. Overlap them so if one spot pulls up, the whole section won't.

sp basically don't line up the seams in each row, kinda like vinyl siding or layin a hardwood floor?? and of course i have to make a nice layer of topsoil after i grade the area, correct? thanks for the thoughts guys!!!

Oops, forgot to get back to you after my stupid comment above!

Yes, you should stagger the seams.

One main thing that makes a good sod job is the way you put the pieces together. You don't want to just throw them down and push them together.


You want to kneel down and pick up one seam in your left hand and the other seam in your right hand. Then kind of make them meet together at the same time on the ground. Sort of like a zipper coming together. If you just push them against each other, some of the green grass may get smashed between them, it can die and leave you will small strips of dead grass where the two pices butt up.

Don't worry, doing the above is very very fast once you get started. But it's what will make a sod job look it's best.

Some people recommend watering it down and then using a lawn roller to squish it into the soil. Well, if you have the sub soil smoothed enough, it will be just fine without the roller.

But make sure you SOAK it down right after you get a decent amount done.

And it should be watered virtually every day.

Sweet thanks for the info, that was the stuff i was hoping for- i knew there had to be little tricks to making it look right. And the soil under will def be graded smooth and perfectly, i have a sub contractor/ good friend of mine spreading the loam for me with a bobcat and he's a 20+ year eqipment operator! thanks again for the insight man, i REALLY appreciate it, Hawk
