  • need edger advice

in an effort to be more proffesional i have decided to get an edger and stop using the string trimmer. i can do it ok with the trimmer but it still does not look just right to me. i do small residentials for the most part right now so i am wondering is the 'stick' edgers sufficient and why would you nedd the bigger walk behind types. are the for cutting out flower beds or are the just more powerful machines than the sticks? thanks

walk behind edger is more powerful. u use it for first time edgings (this is where there is alot of overhang, turf to cut thru, etc) . u can use a walk behind edger for edging beds also. definitely get a stick edger, a cheapo will do fine (around $200). you use the stick edger for maintaining walkways that were already edged. it is professional, and fast.

I use walk behind edgers only, every time I cut. That is just my prefrence. I tried stick edgers but found them to be awkward. I maintain mainly commercial accounts with a lot of sidewalks and find it easier to use a walk behind. I use Little Wonders and Mclane edgers only

stihl makes a good stick edger. they are nice addition to your arsenal. I'd go with a stick over a walk behind just for the room it takes and the ease of loading and off loading. and I think they are faster too and do a great job. some folks on this forum will say use a string trimmer but they do have a liabilty to them if not careful. I tend to use both if I have the string trimmer out I may just edge "an established edged " lawn but I prefer the cut of the edger. there is two cents. Shoal

We use a walk behind unit for a first time, after that or with an established edge we us an Edgit. I love it it cost about $50. and mounts on our line trimmer, you can edge or trim without changing anything but the angle you hold the trimmer. Some folks love them others hate them. Check out their web site and see for yourself. they have some that will fit on a curved shaft trimmer but I would suggest using one with a straight shaft trimmer only.

This is not a commercial just a happy customer.

Like shoal, I have a stihl stick edger. One of best investments ever made. You can fly right through edging, much quicker on established edges than walk behind.

I edge with a Shindaiwa stick edger and then trim where it's needed. Stick edgers are a necessity for mid to high end accounts. Low end accounts I only use a string trimmer... but I can edge better with a string trimmer than most LCOs using a stick or walk behind edger.
