    Hello Everybody:

100 degree Temps in JawJa are Common.

The Best thing to do is Keep on Working (If you have the Work) because the Competition will Slow Down & That's when you get the Work Around here. Staying on Schedule is one of the Most Important things in this Business.

The Competition doesn't have the Manpower or Equipment to Keep up. Hot Weather Seperates the Men from the Boys!

Stay indoors and do what? If your customers call you and ask where you are, what are you gonna say, "Sorry, Mr. Smith but its too hot we'll be there when the temperature goes down, by the way, you still owe me for this months service!" You gotta get out there or maybe your in the wrong business. Just a thought.

Okay, this is my first year mowing and it is only part-time so I have not made it through a summer yet which is over 100 here for 2 days now. Isn't there a point where your just mowing grass that is almost dead after several days without water and constant high temperatures. Doesn't this hurt the customers grass with those big mower wheels? Are you just mowing and all that is flying out is dust and little grass? Do the customers think its okay to mow their grass in this type of conditions?
Just trying to learn the business.

          What about trimming,hedges,edging,bed clean up,etc.
There is more to it than just running the mower.
What are you billing them for? Just mowing? Or general landscape maintenance?

I'm working 6 am to noon or so. Its working out nice, started July 1. The next couple months it will be little dew. I'm not saying hit residental homes at 6 but commercial loves it.
Properly maintained lawns can handle heat and drought better because of better root system, also higher cutting helps.
Even though shorter cut grass requires less water, the water loss from soil because of higher soil temperature and wind defeats the lower cutting and puts far more stress on the lawn.

When it gets dry and hot, the grass slows. At this point, mowing is on an "as needed" basis. There are other outdoor tasks that need to be done, so go get em'!

To keep yourself in good shape, drink a 50/50 mix of gatoraide and water thru the day. Dehydration and low sodium levels can sneak up on you. Be careful!!

It has been hot and dry here lately also but we still run our routes. Unless a specific customer lets us know in advance not to mow we check each route when due. If they do not need mowing we check with the customer first before moving on.

I provide baseball style caps with the business name on them to the workers.

We carry plenty of water with us and I make sure if it is extremely hot that everyone gets plenty. Even if this does slow us down some it is better than having a worker get sick. Our most valuable resource is our workers.

In my opinion this is why it is important to have contracts. You still make money per week and month but you don't have to hack someone's lawn up to make money especially if the lawn is impoverished. It is a good point to let the customer know that this price includes looking after flowerbeds, edging, blowing, leaf removal even if mowing is not required. It gives them a sense of security since they are still paying you at least you are maintaining the entire lawn and not just cutting grass.

A/C would be nice but mowers already cost to much.

Maybe we could just add a little 12 volt fan and a cheap canvas cover over our head.
